I am trying to use my netBook to send faxes by using a mobile phone as a modem. Do anyone know if I can use a Nokia 9210i or a SonyEricsson P800?

And if I use either one of these two, what modem setting should I use?

Control panel - Modems - Initialisation - Fax init. string

What shall I write in the field for this? Something like AT... or what?

Can someone help me with this?

And also tell me if it is possible to use one of the above-mentioned mobile phones as a modem. Are there any special preparations that must be performed with the cell phone to use it as a modem?

Best regards, Morten

The basic thing you will need is for your mobile provider to 'data enable' your account - without this enablement you will not be able to do data or fax.

Once you have this enablement, I know for sure that the P800 can be used as a modem - check my recent thread in the 'Symbian Smartphones' forum for more info, including the data init string.

I have not used my phone for sending/receiving faxes, so I cannot offer any advice concerning fax init strings.

It works very well on both over IrDA. On the 9210(i) you need to enable the faxmodem which normally is under Extras. On the P800 you need to click on the IrDA symbol and make sure that Modem is checked under "Infrared Status".

No use the same as above. On the netBook:

Speed: depends on whether or not you use GPRS. Currently I have it at 38400.
Connect via: Infrared
Fax class: Auto
The init (reset) string I use on the netBook is "ATZ".
Data init string: I currently leave this one empty both for my Malaysian and Swedish cellular operator, but it might be different for other GPRS settings, not too sure.
Fax init string: Empty
Flow Control: Hardware (RTS/CTS)
Terminal Detect: Unchecked
Carrier Detect: Checked
Modem Type: Mobile

If the netBook had supported bluetooth you could have used that in lieu of IrDA on the P800. We have a Macintosh notebook with bluetooth and it works quite well.
