I currently have a Palm III that I've owned and used since 1999, but have not synched with my Mac computer for a very long time. The cradle has a serial connection and I never upgraded to a USB cradle to use with my G4 Mac. I do have a USB adapter but I haven't been able to hotsynch at all. I've tried everything Palm suggested on their web site to connect to my computer, but nothing works.

At any rate, I am contemplating purchasing a Palm m125 and would like to know if there is any way to connect the Palm III to the Palm m125 so that I can transfer all of my addresses. I'd like to start backing up my addresses on my computer again (and also add them to my email addres book), but I haven't been able to figure out a way to transfer addresses from my Palm III to my computer.

Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

If you can't get the III to HotSync with your Mac, and your first concern is to get your III's address book contents copied to your M125, why not just beam the records? If you haven't beamed info between Palms before, you're in for a real treat. It's one of the handiest features they offer.

Here are the basics:
--Place the III and the M125 head-to-head laying on a flat surface (you can hold them, but placing them on a flat surface will ensure an uninterrupted transfer). Palm recommends that you place them between 4 and 39 inches. You pick.
--Make sure your M125's set to receive beamed info. On the M125, tap the Prefs icon, and from the drop-down menu, select "General." From there, make sure "Beam Receive" is turned on.
--Get into your Palm III's address book (just the list, not a specific record). If you want to beam all address records, make sure "All" is the category selected from the drop-down menu in the upper right corner of the screen.
--Tap the Menu icon in the Graffiti area, and under Record, tap "Beam Category." In a matter of seconds, your address records should show up on the M125.

Assuming your M125 syncs properly with your Mac, you should then be able to do a successful backup to your desktop.

Sorry for going into the detail if you're already familiar with the process, but I figured what the heck. It's late on a Thursday night and I've got the day off tomorrow.

Good luck!

Thanks for your help. I suspected there was a way to do this, but I didn't know how.

No problem. Post an update if you go through with the M125 purchase so we know you're up and running again with the HotSync.

hey,

my experience with serial to usb adapters has varied. the only one that has ever worked with my iiic is the one provided in the macintosh connectivity kit. it works with some cellular phones and my zio CF card reader.

a generic adapter i once bought would not work with the palm, even with a friend's iiic. but, palm's adapter won't connect my current sanyo scp-5150 to the palm or to my 2001 ibook.

hope this helps,

Thanks for your help. I just recieved my m125 and beamed all of my addresses on the Palm III to the m125 without a hitch. I then hotsynched them to my computer, also without a hitch. Your advice helped me make a good decision that worked perfectly and saved me a lot of time. Thanks again!

Glad things worked out, Paul. Sorry for not posting sooner---my cable modem got zapped in a storm last weekend and the tech just figured it out this morning...

Enjoy the M125!
