Network Error: The Network Library is Unavailable

Please help me. I have been a faithful user of Palm's products for years and recently receive the error: "Network Error: The Network Library is Unavailable." I am not sure what to do, as I have reset the Palm V, unsinstalled the Palm Desktop and Intellisync applications from my XP Pro system before reloading them in the proper order. I have done this many, many times.

I am trying to synchronize with Outlook XP. I have done this before I think. This OS is rather new to me. I VPN link to an Exchange Server and get mail from there too, but I always sync with the LOCAL PERSONAL FOLDERS, so this shouldn't matter. To prove that true, I have deleted the Exchange account before syncing again. This does not produce different results.

Palm says that the error is from teh third-party, Itellisync application, but this could be there way of not dealing with it. It seems like something more fundamental than that. I have never had any problem with Intellisync. I believe I am using Intellisync V5 and Palm Deskto V4, the latest on their respective web sites.

I appreciate any help that comes my way. Reading many of the threads have shown me all of those that you have helped. It is really great.

I can expand further if additional information is required.

What OS are you running on the V? At what point in the process does this error message show up? During dial out? After handshake? Let me know.
If you have OS 3.3 or higher I think the network library is with the system. For earlier OSs youl needed to install the network library.

At this point I can only imagine two problems here:
1). OS related.
2). A bad network setting on the Palm.

I have the Palm Vx and have no idea what OS it runs, as I can't seem to locate any identifiers for it.

The error message shows up as it is "restoring handheld database." It simply ends on the PC side and the Palm beeps once and has the Network Error message mentioned earlier. It almost makes it through the entire syncing process, but fails at the end when it is "restoring handheld database."

An email has been sent to Pumatech about the error but I have heard nothing from them yet. I will post the response if it arrives.

I have not changed any network settings on the Palm and don't know which OS is on it. I would have thought that the Palm Vx would have standard operating systems, but I am most likely wrong. Please let me know if I can check this easily, and how it would be done.

The S/N on the back is: 126K12F17EFJ. Not sure if this will help, but thought I would include it anyway.

I also noticed this from Palm's web-site but can't see this functionality anywhere:

"How well does the Palm V handheld work with Microsoft Outlook?
Users now have a choice between synchronizing their Palm V handheld with Palm Desktop software or installing conduit software (included) to synchronize with Microsoft Outlook. The Palm V handheld comes with everything you need to work with Microsoft Outlook. "

To check out the Version of the Palm OS go to the main App screen (Home). Tap on the drop down menu (upper left) tap on INFO, after it loads the screen, go to the bottom and switch to "Version", the OS Version will appear at the top of the list.
Palm recommends Pocket Mirror as the conduit to Outlook. Pocket Mirror is from Chapura.com.

The OS is v.3.5.0 and the ID is 10GK12F17EF-6. I had the ID number wrong before.

Intellisync says that their software works with XP. The version I have is: 5.00.02.

I can't think of anything more that I can do or data I can provide you for your analysis. Your time and thoughts are appreciated.

I just tried syncing using PocketMirror 3.0. This produced the same errors. I will look at the Chapura site again, but I am pretty sure that this will work with XP.

I upgraded it to the latest, v 3.1, and still had the same error. This tells me that the problem is the Palm or one of its settings. I am not sure what to do at this point. Your guidance is hugely appreciated.

Please list the settings on your Palm in "Connections" and in "NetworK."

PS: Have you tried a hard reset on that Palm Vx? I am really wondering if there is a glitch on the Palm that prevents the Network Library from being recognized at the point where it is addressed and closed.

The hard reset is as follows: Hold down the Power on button. At the same time poke the reset pin in the reset hole. Remove the reset pin continue to hold the Power button for 10 to 15 seconds. Let the power button go. You should see a screen offering to remove all of your data if you push the scroll up button. Do so assuming you have backed up. Hotsync and try your connect again.

Sorry. I thought I had said this earlier, but see that I hadn't. I have reset the Palm Vx many, many times. It does appear that the Network Library doesn't load, as it makes it through all other processes fine, but errors at "restoring network databases."

PS: When your palm is in the cradle linked to SyncWizard and all of your Palms contents are shown on the PC screen do you see the "Library" file?

Well we now know that the Network Library is on the Palm, so the error message is being generated as an erroneous response to the check command. Now all we need to know is why?

I recognize most of this reinstall after your hard reset as normal but I am really perplexed by the repeated "Graffiti_ShortCuts.PRC". Each gets one underlined spce added to the name? There are other strange lines as well. I have sought the advice of a very knowledgable individual. I'll be back.

1. The Graffiti Shortcuts thing is normal, although I don't know why it happens. You can delete all the ones with the extra "___" at the end. Also delete the Update_2_0_5.prc file. (Actually, this may be the problem - you're installing the OS 3.5.3 patch, then installing the OS 2.0.5 patch on top of it, which may mess up the Network Library.)

2. You can also delete the C:\Program Files\Palm\PoserK\Backup\Temp007\ folder.

3. Check your System conduit setting - it should be set to "Handheld overwrites desktop," but it looks like it is set to "Desktop overwrites handheld."

4. Did the log you posted correspond to a HotSync immediately following a hard reset?

5. Once you've removed the 2.0.5 patch from your Backup folder, do another hard reset and HotSync and let us know if you still see the error.

Sorry about the delay. I was out of town through last night.

I completed Jennifer's steps, but the results did not change. I have included the latest entry from the log file at the end of this paragraph. The "Desktop overwrites handheld" was a one-time setting. I wanted to minimize the chance of overwriting empty fields into my Outlook Contacts.

I have reset the Palm since the log below nad the results are still the same. Please don't give up. I am eager to get this working.

2. Click on the HotSync icon in the taskbar and choose "Custom." Please list all the conduits you see, along with their settings ("Synchronize," etc.).

1. Are you doing a hard reset before each of these HotSyncs? Why?

2. Then, of course, after asking that, I'm going to ask you to do one. But - do it this way. HotSync to back up your data, rename your c:\Palm\<username>\Backup folder to BackupOld, and do a hard reset. Now HotSync to restore your PIM data and see if you still get the error. If you don't get the error, reinstall the 3.5.3 update (preferably from a fresh download), then reinstall just your apps and their data from the BackupOld folder, one at a time. If you're still not getting the error and you don't want to set up your Network and Connection settings again, you can reinstall NetworkDB and ConnectionDB, but do them one at a time. You can also restore your Saved_Preferences file, but do it by itself. If there are any other system files you want to reinstall, do them last, and do them one at a time. If you get the error, tell me the last thing you installed before getting the error.

1. The Network Library Error locks up the Palm. The only way I can get it to respond is by issuing a hard reset.

2. I will try to do as you ask, but will likely fumble around some. How do I perform these individual installations? Any quick advice you sould provide would be great.

You can go to your Palm/"Hotsyn ID"/Backup folder and click on each app which will then be placed in the Palm Install Tool folder for install at the next hotsync.

Thanks. It finally worked. I renamed the Backup folder, it created a new one, I installed JFile and now everything is fine. I wasn't sure which application were needed, so I just installed the largest one. My OS was already 3.5.3, so I never did update this. Are there any other applications that I should have loaded? Here is the recent portion of the Hotsync logfile:

Great! It looks like your other major app is Progect - I assume you still want that, along with the files you've created in Progect (the lbPG- files).

Keep that BackupOld folder for a while, because as you use the Palm, you may find things missing; then you can go back to the BackupOld folder and install the files you need.
