Can anyone confirm whether the Malay Netbooks support GPRS connection through mobile phones?

Thanks!

As far as the Psion is concerned, a GPRS connection is just the same as any other dialup. Generally, the "number" is *99# and a special data string may be required in Control Panel / Modems.

It is essentially the phone and network which need to support the GPRS technology, not the computer.

I assume that, as the Malaysian netBooks were intended for educational purposes, they do still have the dialup facility?

Hi Mike,

sorry, my question is not clear.

My understanding is GPRS (and a whole bunch of connectivity) was only added to the Netbook OS in an OS update sometime in early September 2002.

As such, perhaps the OS in the Netbook is older than that particular OS. And if so, does it support GPRS? Perhaps current owners of Malay Netbooks can verify this.

It would be very helpful to those comtemplating buying a Malay Netbook to know whether GPRS is supported.

The Malay Netbook does have the normal dial facilities. There is no noticeable difference from your standard Netbook GUI. (Apart from the start-up screen and a few other neglible areas)

I've been using a GPRS connection with netBook and mobile phone since long before the latest netBook OS surfaced. I've also used it with my MC218, RevoPlus and 5mx.

I think you may be getting confused with support for the GPRS PCMCIA card, which was added in the recent OS release. (Some will argue that that was already possible, but I won't go into that!)

There is no reason why a GPRS connection should not work from the MBook - it may just be necessary to install the GPRS update, available from Mike McC's very useful website:

Thanks Julie,

for your clarification. I was indeed confused. For your Netbook did you need to install the Mobile Connectivity Update?

Thanks

The Mobile Connectivity Update is only for the Series 5mx and MC218.

You may have to install the Mobile GPRS Update but then if you have problems, delete the Irda.prt file in C:\System\Libs\
