For anyone that's interested...I just visited the Clove Technology web site www.clove.co.uk and noticed they are selling a large batch of second hand Series 7 at £170 + VAT each.

What a shame there aren't any nB upgrade modules to go with them! ;)

There are! Fox Pop are advertising them as of this weekend, plus cheap netbooks!

There have been *suggestions* that David Lowe's offer (made available thru FoxPop) may not be genuine - as in too good to be true.

Thats NOT a fact, it's just a suggest to be CAUTIOUS. FoxPop are NOT responsible for the offer, Mr Lowe is, so don't be lulled by FoxPop's name!

For a start, the Netbook pictures shown *look* to be Series7's that have been upgraded the Netbook personality modules. IMPO anyway!

And those Netbook modules are suspiciously cheap, given the huge demand for them - he could charge much more money if he wanted.

If someone knows Mr Lowe, then perhaps they could ask him to discuss his offer on this forum? That might help ally fears.

Chris,

After reading your post I decided to have a look at the pictures of the netBooks on FoxPop and it looks like (zoomed in using PSP) the machine in the photos doesn't have the 'name plate' at the top of the keyboard. I'd love to know what David's source of netBooks and personality modules is or even just know a little more about him and until then I would personally steer well clear.

I do not believe that David's prices are that cheap. 330GBP for the Netbook and 80GBP for a Netbook personality module is about the going market rate. Especially when you can get a 'new' Mbook for a lot less from Sita. IIRC when Expansys first sold the personality modules, they were something like 56GBP +VAT +shipping.

Looking at the pictures, the Epoc system icon appears to be orange on these 'Netbooks'. Also the keyboards appear to have the '@' symbol on the '2' key - Were these Netbook US models ?
Does the US Netbook have an orange Epoc button on the touchscreen (lower left hand corner) ?

I think that 330GBP is actually pretty good - in theory you are buying direct from someone in the UK (?); rather than from someone half way around the world, with the unknown VAT issues (50GBP), and the fact that they are not upgradable.

So 330GBP is pretty tempting in my books, *if* the Netbooks turn out to be genuine (which I personally doubt).

David Lowe has also been selling these Netbooks on Ebay, and is also advertising on comp.sys.psion.marketplace (at a higher price!).

Interestingly one of the Netbook piccies on Ebay has an Orange Epoc logo 'softkey' whereas another picture in the same auction shows a traditional Netbook with the green Epoc 'softkey' ??

I have no reason to doubt that David Lowe is genuine. Looks like he's managed to pick up some 'surplus' stock from somewhere - possibly from the US. Or perhaps from a UK company who purchased a batch of Netbooks and never got around to using them. This is not really surprising as the Netbook is intended to be used for third-party OEM applications. These are the sort of company that would purchase a batch of Netbooks for internal stock but might never get around to selling them for whatever reason - perhaps they now use Netpads or are now waiting for the new Netbook 2 ??

We know from a poster on the previous incarnation of this board that the Netbook personality modules were manufactured by a US company. I wonder if this is where the Expansys modules also came from ???

I guess that it is easier to understand the reasons for lots of 'surplus' Netbooks hitting the market right now. However, surplus Netbook personality modules hitting the market for a second time does not make any sense ??

Hi,

I have been in communication with someone who is thinking of buying one of these netbooks. I have been offering help on the types of questions to ask the seller and the replies have proven very useful and detailed. If anyone else is considering buying one of these netBooks or just a personality module, then I am willing to send this info on to you, if you PM me with your email address.

Please note that I have no connection with this seller whatsoever. I am just offering to pass this info on, so that you have the ability to make a more informed choice before handing over any cash. This info is no different from what you would receive from the seller if you asked yourself.

Kind Regards

Si

HI,

Well I've noticed one thing, David Lowe is requesting with every sale of a Personality module, that the series 7 module must be sent in return. At the same time, Dave is selling Psion series 7s that are labeled as netbooks. A logical conclusion to this is that Dave MIGHT be taking the personality modules out of the netbooks, and putting in series 7 modules he's getting back in their place, turning them into series 7s. Possibly to get a higher overall price. This I guess might explain why there needs to be a 14 day delay too I guess.

But then again Dave states that the series 7's are new (I would have thought claiming they are new when they have second hand personality modules in would be stretching it a bit, especially if the said modules had been sent through the post, prossibly unprotected from static). And he also says they have been "wrongly badged as netBooks". So I don't know, make your own mind up I guess.

thanks for the info wanman,

interesting how David says the machines have a green epoc softkey, where as the picture showed a red/orange one, and a blank above keyboard logo.

Anyone know if/when/for who netbooks where made like that?

Thanks

Hi Psionbloke,

I can only assume that these were old pictures found on the web, rather than digital shots of his actual machines. If my memory serves me, the original 7 had an Orange Epoc symbol but all recent 7's and all netBooks have the turquoise colour.

Anyone know if the original netBooks had an orange silkscreen button aswell or have they always been turquoise?

Regards

Si

I think they've always been turquoise - my July 2000 netBook is. I think the orange icon was introduced for the S7 to make it similar in appearance to S5s. Maybe somebody else knows different?

Hi All,

I've spoken to D. Lowe over the phone and he seems genuine, returning my calls and emails. I've also taken the plunge and gone for one of his netbooks so am eagerly awaiting the 16th. We shall then see if the sceptics were right.

Have also taken the plunge - guess I'll know in about 8 days when its meant to be delivered :D

Have no qualms myself - he's based in the uk, full contact details and has kept me informed via email and answered any questions I had.

Also they are now being sold via Googol.net who offer to act as intemediary for credit card payments and also by:

I'm glad I'm not on my own in taking the plunge. I am like a kid at Christmas and can't wait, my wife thinks I've lost it, but it must be a touch of psionitis.

Yeah I've sourced a wireless Lan card thats on the compatibility list as well so am hoping to get that going when mine arrives as well.

Always been a Psion fan but only got round to getting one about 2 years ago when the MC218's started going cheap.

I've just received my netbook from David Lowe, and so far it's been excellent; within 10 minutes of getting it, I'd got it to recognise my WiFi card and was checking my email.

It doesn't have the label above the keyboard, but my wife said that we received a letter from David today, saying that a label will be sent shortly.

Hi, Could ianchapple tell us about the WiFi card he has been successfully using? This might help a lot of us looking for the right hardware to connect wireless. Thanks for your help .

I'm using the Buffalo slimline card (WLI-PCM-L11GP-3), and it works very well in combination with my Draytek wireless router.

FYI, I've got a Series 7 (incorrectly badged as a Netbook) purchased from David Lowe via eBay. I found David honest, clear and reliable. The Series 7 was a brilliant bargain and I'd buy again from him.

I had exactly the same missing when I purchased from David. My label duly arrived a week later as promised. It's a great machine. Anyone know any good battery monitor utilities? I've used iBattery which is OK but I wanted to check any competition before buying it.

This program is well known for the Revo - the version here is specifically for the S7 and netBook. I generally have it running, although the netBook doesn't have the complications of the Revo battery, so monitoring is not so essential in my opinion.

I am pretty pleased with PSIBatt (http://www.tatbak.de/PsiBatt/psibatt.htm). The only thing I miss is some guide as to current (no pun intended) power consumption. If my memory serves me correctly my 5mx gave some sort of mA reading, but I have yet to find anything that gives this information for the NB. Would be handy for some PCMCIA card tests etc...

Andy

p.s. So that this post isn't entirely OT - my Lowebook is working fine, that reminds me I have no sticker yet though, i'd better remind him... :)

I use ChaDis on my Revo Plus but much prefer iBattery on my Series 7/nB (I confess that I tried Chadis on the 7 when it became available but didn't like it - perhaps it has now moved on).

iBattery can be found at www.btinternet.com/~kenny111
