I now have downloaded the required upgrades on my desktop. When I go to install the 4.1 onto the unit, I click through to the point where it asked for a hotsync. When I hotsync, I get the following:

"Palm OS Software Does Not Match: The Palm OS software in this Upgrade Utility does not match the model of the handheld you are attempting to upgrade.
Click Exit and locate the correct Upgrade Utility for your handheld."

There are 2 things that I am not sure about here.
1. If the unit is to be debugged, I have seen 2 methods. Palm advised to press the down button while using the reset pin, then letting go and there should be a blinking square at the upper left of the screen. ( I have never been able to do this.)
2. I have seen recommended on this list that the way to debug is to press both up and down buttons while resetting, which causes a blue line to appear at the bottom of the screen. (I have done this and it worked as described.)

The questions I have are as follows:

Which of these is the proper way to debug?
Also, once it is in the debug mode, then what? The unit does not hotsync while the bottom blue line appears. I always have to reset in order to be able to hotsync. Then, I get the above error message.

Finally, here is another wrinkle that I did not reveal earlier. I have been advised that the Palm m505 is the same as the IBM Workpad c505. The IBM is what I am using here. As far as I know, it is a US model. In fact, it says it was assembled in the US on the back of it. Does anyone have any idea how I can successfully upgrade? I am about to just give up. Thanks!

Well, join the club. I too have a IBM WorkPad C505, and so far, the upgrade doesn't work. I could not ever get the unit into debug either, so don't feel bad. Check the IBM website to see if they ever release an OS4.1 update, but for now, just download the FATFS, Backlight, and Copy Updates off of Palm.com. It's not as risky as the upgrade, and does the same thing basicly. Otherwise, we've lucked out. Sorry.

With thanks to Doug Boehme and especially Ben Steeves, I finally got this
thing (IBM c505) upgraded. Just between you and me, here is what the Palm
Tech. people don't seem to know. THE KEY IS THIS: YOU MUST USE A SERIAL
CRADLE. IT WILL NOT WORK WITH A USB CRADLE.
1. First, update the desktop software to 4.0.1 and then 4.1.
2. Install the 4.1 upgrade for the 505 from the Palm website.
3. Use the "Expert" method.
4. Debug the c505 by holding down both up & down buttons.
5. Follow instructions to install.
and lo and behold, IT WORKED!!!

Some of you know how long I have tried to get this to work. I am so
relieved. I almost gave up. Thank you so much.

How did you get your C505 into debug. Exact directions please. I've been trying for awhile now using the information you gave in your last post, but it won't work. TIA.

To debug, I first turned on the unit. I held down BOTH up and down buttons simultaneously while I reset with a paperclip. Just push it in and release while holding down the buttons. On the c505, you get a thin blue lline at the bottom of the screen. You need to use a SERIAL cradle. It will not work with a USB. I tried forever until I discovered that the serial cradle is the key. I hope this helps!

OK. I'll try that. Thanks. I'm still not sure if I want to try the upgrade or not, based on what other people are saying, it's not much better, and can have problems. However, my PalmPix Camera is supposed to run better on the newer OS, so that's why I want to upgrade. I'm using an adapter to sync with my dad's Palm Vx serial cradle. Wish me luck! Thanks again.
