I am trying to browse the internet using a Compaq iPaq 3630, Compaq PCMCIA card expansion slot and a PSION 56k Gold Card modem. The hardware is functioning correctly as I can get it to dial a number (the same number I use for my logging onto AOL on my home computer) but I can't seem to get a reply from the AOL servers. Is this possibly because I don't have the AOL software installed on the iPaq and if so where can I get this software?

No, you can't dial up unless you use the AOL software. Unfortunately, there is none as of now.
I have AOL DSL at home and had not been able to access the network from my WiFi enabled Toshiba e740 until a few days ago. Check out the following site to find out more. Basically, I have my router setup to use PPPoE to sign on using my AOLscreenname@aol.com and the corresponding password. That way, i can bypass the AOL client/software. I have been able to connect from my PDA since then.

Good luck.
