Looking over this message board, there is a common problem for those folks who inherited, purchased or received a used Clie PEG-S300. That is “Attempting to connect the PDA to the computer through HotSync is not happening.”
There isn’t much documentation on this subject. The Sony website doesn’t mention the specifics on making this happen and I guess they don’t care. (It is a second market issue after all.) Anyhow, I figure this common problem is due to fact that most of us folks received the PDA after it was given a hard reset. Probably, those boys from Sony made some factory settings, which were dropped when the PDA was reset.
Whether you have the original CD or not, you should be able to connect with the software available at
http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/support/clie/s300/softwareupdates
I successfully used the CD version of the Palm Desktop, however, the CLIEPD401.exe should work just the same if you don’t have the CD. Just follow the installation instructions. I installed the USBSW11.exe to update the USB Switcher application. This app is to intercept the comm port communication and send it to the USB connection.
Don’t sweat about finding drivers for the USB cradle or S300 PDA. They are available on the newer Windows operating systems (Me and 2K). They are also in the CLIEPD401.exe package. They are NOT available on the Internet through out the world. (Believe me, I’ve looked.)
Once the desktop was installed, I used the default settings for the HotSync application on the PC. It was set for a Local connection and fast as possible for speed. On the CLIEPD401 version, it has a USB setting too. Although I haven’t tried it yet, I would recommend trying Local first then USB if the connection doesn’t occur.
Then on the Clie S300, do the following:
1. In the HotSync application, select the “Drop Down Menu” icon to drop the Options menu.
2. Select “Connection Setup.” In the Available Configurations screen, select “Direct Serial” and then “Edit...”. (I don’t recall exactly when this happened but a new Configuration called “Custom” was created with the following settings. If “Custom” is available, edit that setting.)
3. With the Connection Method menu, select “USB to PC”. Then select “Details...”
4. In the Details, select 9600 bps for the speed and Automatic flow control. Hit Ok twice and then Done to bring you to the main HotSync screen.
5. Below the HotSync button, ensure “Custom” is selected on the drop down menu. Hit the HotSync button on the screen. (The HotSync button on the cradle did not work for me. It would start the process but a connection would not happen.)
6. On the PC, the HotSync should miraculously engage. If you set up your PDA with a password, enter it with lowercase letters. Unbeknownst to me, this Palm OS doesn’t recognize uppercase letters in passwords.

I hope this is helpful for you. I’ll keep my eyes on this posting to see if you have any luck with it, so please reply.

I just reloaded my server, and decided to put my clie on it, but during the move, I discovered that I didn't have the clie CD.

I found your post, and followed it, but when I try to do a hotsync, win98se detects a new usb device, then it asks me for the "PalmTop Install CD." I click OK, and it asks me for the file: SoPE1USB.cat.

Where do I get that file (without the original CD)? TIA.

The CLIEPD401.exe may have it. I don't recall. However, I am going to try the attachment feature that this web site created recently. It is a zipped file of the three files in the \Drivers folder from the original CD.
Please reply if it worked.

I used Me to get the PDA to sync. Searching through my computer I found a handful of PEG1 files which I zipped and attached. However, none of them have the .cat extension.

Tx jaxdagger for your info.
I`m very happy that problems seem to be the same around the world.
being in Germany I`ve tried to fix the problem by various guidelines given in this forum, nevertheless nothing worked.
By chance the clie system answers to me suggesting to use the comport indicated by the device manager.
Stepping into HOTSYNC there are only three ports available and the system tells me that all ports are engaged.

Fine, any suggestions ?

I loaded my S300 on an "out of the box" XP installation last week and posted a message concerning it. If you hadn't a chance to read it, the installation went as advertised with two exceptions. So I didn't experience the problem you had.
What I noticed in device manager concerning the Sony PEG device was the device always showed up on com port 3 and only while the HotSync was occurring. This is a PnP behavior. The operating system is looks for an unassigned com port and then enables the device.
Since the com ports share resources on the computer, the computer is not finding an available port. You may try disabling other devices that are using com ports. Modems and UPSs are the typical candidates. Rarely, printers use com ports too.
The HotSync Manager application was left at the default "USB" setting. And it worked for me. You may try the Local setting if you haven't already.
Good Luck:)

Thank you so much. How did you figure that out? This Clie drives me nuts when I have problems HotSyncing and without you, I may have just thrown it out the window.

Thanks again!

Hello,
I have tried the above. Chaning the Clie settings were important. None of the desktops worked for me. However, I was able to go to the Sony site and download the Palm Desktop for the Clie 4.01 and it's software includes the USB switch. Now that I can Hot Sync, I have another problem. It wants to download all of my mail in the inbox even though I have that disabled. It also erases any new addresses in the Desk top and will not Sync the addresses either way. What am I doing wrong here?
Thanks
