Looking over this message board, there is a common problem for those folks who inherited, purchased or received a used Clie PEG-S300. That is “Attempting to connect the PDA to the computer through HotSync is not happening.”
There isn’t much documentation on this subject. The Sony website doesn’t mention the specifics on making this happen and I guess they don’t care. (It is a second market issue after all.) Anyhow, I figure this common problem is due to fact that most of us folks received the PDA after it was given a hard reset. Probably, those boys from Sony made some factory settings, which were dropped when the PDA was reset.
Whether you have the original CD or not, you should be able to connect with the software available at
http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/support/clie/s300/softwareupdates
I successfully used the CD version of the Palm Desktop, however, the CLIEPD401.exe should work just the same if you don’t have the CD. Just follow the installation instructions. I installed the USBSW11.exe to update the USB Switcher application. This app is to intercept the comm port communication and send it to the USB connection.
Don’t sweat about finding drivers for the USB cradle or S300 PDA. They are available on the newer Windows operating systems (Me and 2K). They are also in the CLIEPD401.exe package. They are NOT available on the Internet through out the world. (Believe me, I’ve looked.)
Once the desktop was installed, I used the default settings for the HotSync application on the PC. It was set for a Local connection and fast as possible for speed. On the CLIEPD401 version, it has a USB setting too. Although I haven’t tried it yet, I would recommend trying Local first then USB if the connection doesn’t occur.
Then on the Clie S300, do the following:
1. In the HotSync application, select the “Drop Down Menu” icon to drop the Options menu.
2. Select “Connection Setup.” In the Available Configurations screen, select “Direct Serial” and then “Edit...”. (I don’t recall exactly when this happened but a new Configuration called “Custom” was created with the following settings. If “Custom” is available, edit that setting.)
3. With the Connection Method menu, select “USB to PC”. Then select “Details...”
4. In the Details, select 9600 bps for the speed and Automatic flow control. Hit Ok twice and then Done to bring you to the main HotSync screen.
5. Below the HotSync button, ensure “Custom” is selected on the drop down menu. Hit the HotSync button on the screen. (The HotSync button on the cradle did not work for me. It would start the process but a connection would not happen.)
6. On the PC, the HotSync should miraculously engage. If you set up your PDA with a password, enter it with lowercase letters. Unbeknownst to me, this Palm OS doesn’t recognize uppercase letters in passwords.
I hope this is helpful for you. I’ll keep my eyes on this posting to see if you have any luck with it, so please reply.
