Hi,

I've had mixed reports about the success of failure of 128 bit WEP with a variety of brands of card (all Lucent chipset of course) with a variety of access points.

What's your experience been everybody? Does it work or not? Text keys or only hex keys? Let me know by posting to this thread - I'm looking to update my FAQ with better WEP info.

I can report success using the low-profile Buffalo PCMCIA card (already listed in your FAQ, not to hand so unable to provide model) with HEX WEP keys against a D-Link base station.

Of course the Buffalo PC card is a rebranded version of the Gold Avaya WIFI card. Note that only the Gold Avaya/Lucent/Orinoco card supports 128 bit WEP - all Silver versions are only 64 bit.

Jezza.

Thanks for this thread - I knew there was something I still needed to do! I've managed to set mine up with 64 bit but it didn't work with 128 bit. I do have an Avaya Silver though.

For sure, I have a rebranded Silver - an Enterasys Roamabout. I've just heard people have had varying degrees of success. Just interested ito get to the bottom of it.

I've got an Avaya Gold card. Its working very well with 128 bit encryption (with a Netgear FM114P Access point/router).

I resisted turning the WEP on for a long time for fear it would slow the whole thing down.

Shouldn't have worried, I didn't notice any difference in the speed at all.

I'm using the hex keys, with a key generated using a passphrase on the router.

Blocks the stylus hole of course though! I originally purchased a SMC 2632 card because it didn't block the stylus, but found the performance to be woeful. I haven't tried it with encryption turned on.

The extra signal strength of the Avaya Gold makes all the difference (but I can't get it to work with power management turned on).

I use an Interasys Roamabout with 128 bit (hex key) WEP on a Malay netBook hooked into a Linksys combination wireless AP/4 port router and have had no connectivity problems and extremely good throughput.

I also have as part of the setup, a Linksys signal booster on the AP and an industrial antenna replacing one of the antennas on the booster.
