Could everyone who has done the latest netBook OS upgrade (the one released last week) report on the following please?
1) What version of Opera do you have?
2) Is it activated by the old "web" silkscreen icon, or from the extras bar?
3) Did you have to enter a registration code?
I'm trying to figure out why a friend and I have different answers to the above questions.
TIA
Julie
Opera 5.14 (36)
silkscreen icon works
no reg code
This should be the case from a cold boot off a CF card on a netBook with any 158 release I think.

I am Julie's friend who installed the US version of the 158 OS. It has all the stuff on it but has Opera 5.13 when I use the silkscreen. I also had to reinstall the Tomtom stuff only as it was there, but the dialog came up and said to reinstall off of the CD. I reinstalled and they work fine. All the stuff is on my Netbook, improvements and all. I have installed it like the directions said. Put it on a CFD, rename it, and insert it in my Netbook and you can see it installing itself. I am happy with it, just wondering why its a bit different, if it is.
Thanks,
Bobbyr

Hi Bob, great to see you here. :)
For the record, having installed the new OS I have Opera 5.14, now on the silkscreen icon, not in Extras, but I still had to enter my registration code as I would normally after any hard reset.
Can only assume it's detected my previous copy of 5.14 on the CF disk. Anyone shed any light?
Anyhow, it's a bit like our earlier debate - not exactly an earth-shattering problem, so let's live with it!

I agree Julie, I will probably leave it alone as everything works great on it. I might also download Cleanit. I think that I might have aready, but haven't used it yet. Thanks Zolee
Thanks,

Hi Julie,
I thought that may have caused a problem as I had Opera & Java installed on my CF Card too so before I upgraded, I uninstalled both applications so that the OS ones would take over.
If you have two copies of an application, ER5 will always use the app stored on C/D/E: Drive first before going to any app on Z:. This is why the .sis coloured icon problem is solved by copying the old OS InstApp application folder and placing it C:\System\Apps.
When new OS went in, Opera V5.14 (36) appeared, activated by silkscreen icon and no reg code needed. If I were you I would remove your Opera/Java from CF and enjoy the free copy for a while. I am sure Opera will be upgrading again soon and we will all have to shell out for a new reg code then (Unless of course those nice people at Psion Teklogix provide us with a free update !!)

Hi Si
Thanks for the explanation - it all makes sense now. Except for:
If I were you I would remove your Opera/Java from CF and enjoy the free copy for a while.I can't see the point - what would be the difference? Apart from saving a bit of space on my CF, which isn't really an option, since I sometimes use that disk with my MC218 and need access to Opera there too.
Storing Opera on internal on the MC218, then trying to run the Java client that we need for EpocChat definitely falls into the category of over-optimism! :D
Anyway, all is cool - I just wanted to understand it better! :)

Ah I see your point. If you are using your CF in more than one machine, there is definitely a case for leaving it where it is. I removed it as I now have had a seperate CF for my 5mx and 7book for some time now.
It is still a great advert for Symbian that ER5 is robust enough to cope with all this jiggery pokery. I couldn't see windows being so forgiving !!

Couldn't agree more - and just think of what size CF disk you would need! :D :D :D
For the record, I do have more than one disk, a 64 in the MC218 and a 128 in the netBook, just sometimes need access on the MC to stuff on the netBook's disk. It never ceases to amaze me that everything works when I switch disks like that. :)

Thanks you guys for the info. Wanman's comment make sense to me. I have a 250mb and Microdrive in my Netbook, plus I upgraded to 64mb or ram in it so I have lots of memory and have Opera 5.14 on my 128mb CFD on my 5mx, so I might give his suggestion a try and see what happens. I don't have a problem with the reg number for it as I have a number. Again thanks Julie and Wanman.
Thanks,
Bobbyr

Wow guys. I just did what Si said to do except I didn't reinstall 158 OS. I was looking around my CFD and Microdrive and found two Opera 5.13s. I removed them and thought let me just check my Opera silk screen and see if a 5.13 is still there. Well, by cleaning off those on the other drives, it brought up Opera 5.14 from the Silk Screen. So you were right to have me remove them, but I thought that I would have to do all the stuff to reinstall 158 OS again. So this might be a good tip for others and for Julie on EPOC Chat.
Thanks,

Excellent, Bob - glad you got that sorted :)
Thanks, Si, for all the input - I for one certainly understand it much better now.

I have tried similar with no joy. I had unistalled my old copy of opera before backing up on my old OS and then restoring to the new OS 158 yet the allocated silk screen does not work though my old setting of having opera on the No:4 silk screen on left is still there. I tried cancelling that and then it moved to extras bar. It is version 5.14 (36) though. I have searched all my directories and can find no other opera files I have tried soft resets and even deleting the system/apps/opera directory and soft reseting still not appearing on the silk screen Tried using CleanIt still no joy. It must be something in the backup I restored as the allocated (second from top on right) silk screen worked before I restored the backup.
Thanks for any help

This may not be what you want to hear, but I would suggest a complete reset of your machine (batteries out again !!) and start from scratch. Install your OS (which includes JAVA so no need to reinstate that from your backup, if there). Once you OS is in (and before you reinstall your backup), try your silk screen buttom. This is the point it will work.....hopefully.
Rather than a full restore of your backup, I would reinstall apps manually and as each one goes in, copy accross you backup of your C:\system\apps\???? folder. If you actually had the application installed on your c: drive then just copy the .ini and .reg files as this will restore any registration codes and application settings.
Other things you need to restore manually, is:
Opera - Bookmarks file (usually stored in the APP folder as above
Contacts - Contacts.cdb, stored on either C:\system\data or D: equivalent. If you had it stored on D then launch the app before copying, move your contacts store to D and then restore your backup of the file over the top of the newly created file.
Email - Copy the whole Mail folder as is. As per contacts, launch the application first and make sure the message store is where you want it (C or D) then copy your Mail folder to replace the system created one.
Additional - Additional application data such as RMR News folder, Personal Alarms, Printer Drivers, etc.
If you get stuck, post it here

Si

I think you meant Contacts is C:\System\data\Contacts.cdb.
Don't replace the Commsdb.dat as it could cause communication problems.

Thanks for the suggestions Si. Yup it is not quite what I would have liked to hear. I do not have time or inclination (still works OK allocated to the optional silkscreen buttons on the left) at present to go through setting it all up again, I will let you you know how I get on later.
