I've been unable to use the e-mail, web, and ftp programs after installing the latest OS on my netBook. Strangely, I can dial my ISP using comms and typing AT&F etc. manually; the modem sound is there and I can get a response and login. However, trying to use the dial-up menus from Opera et al. gives a "Network problem" box and no modem sound.
My settings are as follows:
Modem
Current Modem: Psion Gold Card Modem
Speed: 56700 baud
Connect via: PC Card
Fax Class: Auto
Initialisation: AT&F
Flow Control: Hardware (RTS/CTS)
Terminal Detect (DSR?DTR): checked
Carrier Detect (DCD): checked
Modem Type: fixed line
Dialling
Connection Type: fixed line
Dial Settings
Tone Dial outside: checked
Wait for dial tone: checked
Tone Dial inside: checked
NOTE: this is greyed out and cannot be changed.
Wait for proceed tone: unchecked
Pause after dial out: 0 secs
Any ideas and advice would be very gratefully received

Create the path C:\Logs\Etel\ and after your next connection attempt, have a look at the Etel.txt log file in the Etel folder to see if it gives any clue to the problem
I'm guessing the problem may be to do with your CommsDB.dat file. This file stores all comms settings, and has a new structure for release 158. There is a detailed procedure described in the release notes for ensuring you do not restore this file from the old release.
Might this be the problem?

File is as follows:
----------New Log----------
14.51:13:140625 Tx: ATH
14.51:13:140625 Rx: 0
14.51:13:140625 Rx:
14.51:15:265625 Tx: ATH
14.51:15:265625 Rx: 0
14.51:15:265625 Rx:
14.51:17:390625 Tx: ATH
14.51:17:390625 Rx: 0
14.51:17:390625 Rx:
14.51:19:515625 Tx: ATH
14.51:19:515625 Rx: 0
14.51:19:515625 Rx:
14.51:21:640625 Tx: ATH
14.51:21:640625 Rx: 0
14.51:21:640625 Rx:
14.51:23:765625 Tx: ATH
14.51:23:765625 Rx: 0
14.51:23:765625 Rx:
So it looks like it's sending something out (the ATH) and getting nothing back (the 0).
Still manages to connect using Comms.

I read the notes, not to mention all the other threads about the commsDB.dat problem, and this is an untouched file generated from installing the new OS.
I tested the connections before re-installing any old programs or data files, using manually input settings for modem and Internet connection.
Thanks for the idea. :)

So it looks like it's sending something out (the ATH) and getting nothing back (the 0)
ATH or ATH0 tells the modem to "hang up".
ATH1 tells the modem to go "off hook".
The modem should respond to these commands with "OK".
The exchange in my Etel.txt file starts with (ignoring the time etc at the beginning of the line)
TX: ATH (sending the command)
RX: ATH (modem echoes back the command)
RX: OK (modem acknowledges with "OK")
Your modem is not responding correctly to the commands. Using Comms, send ATZ and Enter to it two or three times to "reset" it and then, still with Comms, try ATH and Enter then ATH1 and Enter (ATH1 should let you hear the dialling tone).
