I need some advice. I'm a graduate student who needs something to write notes and papers with. I have a Dell desktop and I've been looking at notebook computers but they just don't seem to be what I want to carry around. Too big, too heavy (the ones I can afford) and I hate waiting for them to boot up. All I really need it for is word processing. I tried the Palm and Pocket PC with keyboard but the screens are too small for me. So the 790 looks attractive to me. I have two major concerns that I need help with.
1. Will I have any problem synching my notes and papers with MS Word on my Dell desktop?
2. Is the technology on the 790 too old? Will it be supported in the future?
Any thoughts you can give me on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

It synchs with MS Word. I don't think the software is too old for your purposes. It would be a great choice for your needs.

No problems trading files. Use either Activesync or trade files via CF or PCMCIA flash cards. The 790 (or 780 or 770) can read and write the 'real' MS Office Word and Excel formats as well as the pocket versions. So, sync via Activesync is not a mandatory step.
Support for any portable product is uncertain since technologies change so frequently. The HPC Pro platform does not have market share, but it does have a loyal following. I don't see it having much more risk than other CE platforms.
If NEC does announce a new HPC platform, perhaps good deals will be on the 'net for the 790. If not, the 770 and 780 are quite capable for the task(s) you seem interested in and are available via the used market.

and when it is something I've had experience with it makes sense.
Any of the NECs, 770, 780, 790 are more than fast enough and powerful enough for any word processing.
I too am a college student...well was until I graduated, but used my faithful NECs frequently.
I have Office 2000 installed on my big machine, and was able to open text files on my 780 with no problem, and save them as well. If I opened text files from my pc with my 780, the files opened fine, but there was a file conversion that ran automatically when I did so.
You won't be disappointed I don't think whichever route you choose.
