I am having problems with synchronising my contacts between my PC and Psion.
If i enter new details on the PC and then sync them, then they get deleted off the PC and sure as hell don't appear on the Psion.
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks:p
Do you have Psiwin 2.3.3, plus the two bug fixes downloadable from www.psion.com/myPsion?
Also check my FAQ (URL below) for further sync advice.

What desktop PIM are you using? What version of PsiWin? If you're using Intellisync, what version? What version of Windows?
What version of Psion? Are you using the 5mx/Revo Contacts store or a Data file?
Just so I understand, you're saying you can enter a new contact on your PC and when you sync with your Psion, the entry in your desktop PIM gets deleted but the contact never shows in the Contacts file on your Psion? What happens if you enter contact in your Psion and then sync?
Having duplicate contacts can happen from time to time but I've never heard of anything like this before.

Outlook 2000, Win 98 SE.
Yes you are right - i enter contact on PC, sync with Psion and the contact appears on neither!!!

And what version of PsiWin? Are you sure it's 2.3.3? Any earlier version can produce unpredictable results with Win2K. And, confirming that you downloaded and installed the contacts update from Psion?
Still, I've never heard of a situation where you can enter a contact in Outlook, do a sync, and have the contact disappear from Outlook. If all your contacts are in Outlook, you should try deleting all your contacts in your Psion and then syncing, clicking on No when you get the cryptic message about things missing from one machine or the other. PsiWin will then resync and should copy all your contacts from Outlook to your Psion. It's possible that there's some corruption in the Psion Contacts file that's causing this behaviour.

Definitely got 2.3.3!
I actually decided to try to delete all contacts yesterday and re-install.
It did actually work but i don't understand the problem in the first place.
This will be a nice test for all you boffins out there!!!
Thanks for everyones help though.
Ps Jim, I'm not using Win 2 K on the machine that i sync with, although i do have Win XP on my other drive that i haven't tried synching with yet - are there any problems with Win XP when synching?
:)

Opps, sorry about the Win2k reference. I guess everything just looks like Win2K now no matter how it's written:) .
I've run into the occasional stange behavior in the Contacts store where PsiWin simply gets confused and starts doing all kinds of weird things like not syncing or randomly deleting entries. Your's is the first I've seen of it actually deleting new entries from Outlook adn Constacs at the same time. Nonetheless, I've found it easier to simply delete everything from contacts and then let Psiwin do the double sync when it sees all the contacts gone for the Psion. This always seems to fix the problem. It's also a good reason to always have your Psion synced up to date with Outlook.
Win XP and PsiWin work fabulously. I'm typing this now with my Psion syncing to Outlook, something I could never do with any other version of Windows. As I've written before, XP seems to be the version of Windows that PsiWin was actually written for, whcih figures since it came out at about the same time Psion decided to get out of the the PDA business.

Hi (Newbie - but I have read and searched a lot here!!)
Sorry to have to promote this 'old chestnut' to the top - but I am keen to get this right.
I have a Series 5, My PC's OS is XP Pro and I want to synch with Outlook (Office XP).
I have inwardly digested the excellent advice on this forum and this topic thread but have a few outstanding queries before I feel comfortable in going ahead. (I want to get this right first time!).
1. I have downloaded PSiWin 2.3.3 - but have not installed it yet.
2. I have downloaded the registry clean utility ( and hope I will not have to use it (No previous PSiWin ever loaded on this PC).
3. I have downloaded, but not yet installed the contacts resolver from chapura.com - is this suitable for XP it states it is for 2000?
4. I have been unable to track on the psion.com site down the 'two bug fixes' that diem refers to above.
5. In another thread reference was also made to a synchronisation upgrade but I have also failed to find that on the psion.com site.
I would be most grateful for any assistance/ advice in tracking down the upgrades referred to para 4& 5 above and clarification on para 3 wrt XP.
I promise to feedback once I get up and running.:)

Hmm,
I checked the Psion website, and although I could find the Duplicate Contacts patch, I didn't spot a second - I also thought that patch wasn't required if you had 2.3.3?

There are two upgrades that you need to get. One is the Contacts syncronization upgrade and the other is the e-mail sync upgrade. If you want to sync with Organizer 5/6, you also need that upgrade. All of them are listed in the software upgrades section for the 5mx and Revo at the Psion website as of about 1 minute ago. You need these upgrades even if you have also downloaded PsiWin 2.3.3.

Jim - Thanks for that, can I prevail upon your good nature further (sorry)?
I have been to the site are these the correct downloads?

( I ask because the site indicates a file size of less than 1K however on downloading it is 24.6MB - I suspect this is 2.3.3 but I cannot find the email synch upgrade on this site - Help - please!))

Norman,
Yes, you need to download PsiWin 2.3.3, which is about 25 mb as stated in the paragraph below the download link. The contact sync upgrade is also the correct file. You should also get the E-mail 1.5 upgrade as well if you intend to sync e-mails with your PC. The easiest way to get all of these in one place is to go to http://www.psion.com/mypsion/downloads.asp . You have to register your Psion but the MyPsion site provides a more convenient place to both download updates and to be able to get answers from the Psion Knowledgebase.

Hi Jim
Thanks for that - much appreciated.
I am registered on Mypsion.
However I have searched again and cannot find the download E-mail 1.5 upgrade . I do turn up a Dutch language one but take it that is not the one to use! (Is it a free download or a pay one?)
Grateful for a pointer or a linky.

Norman,
Sorry, I was confused. The E-mail update is 1.15. This is rather confusingly labeled as 1.1 on the Psion web site. You can find it at http://www.psion.com/mypsion/downloads.asp?product=Series+5mx&category=Upgrade&os=EPOC&language=&Submit=Search&Keywords= .

Hi Jim
Thank you very much for sticking with me on this - I got there in the end!
Now downloaded that one, so I have all I need - thanks.
Would it be worth posting a sticky with these specific Links for each of these elements of success so that it can be referred to in future - I am sure it will crop up again.
The psion site is very good but searching is a wee bit clumsy if you are not used to the issues.
Thanks once again.

The psion site is very good but searching is a wee bit clumsy if you are not used to the issues I happen to think the Psion site is an unmitigated disaster and I told their webmaster that. I did get a reply asking why, so I told them. There used to be a superb "Downloads" page where you could literally browse the entire library and immediately find exactly what you wanted. Now they have this silly "search" system where you enter info into about four fields and if you are very lucky you might get what you are looking for. For example, the "Mobile Connectivity Update" which is used with a 5mx and mobile phones comes under the section for the Windows operating system - it has nothing whatsoever to do with Windows!
I didn't join in your discussion because Jim is the expert on Synchronisation and it was better to let him get you sorted out.

Ah - now Iknow where my confusion set in - I'm looking at the Series 7 pages.
As I've actually got a netbook (with the latest OS), do Istill need these 2 patches, or are they PsiWin patches?
Jim Cooke
10-04-2003, 09:47 PM
Yes, you still need these upgrades as they are not part of PsiWin. I'm not a Netbook user so, if I'm wrong I hope someone will correctl me, but I believe that the Netbook has the same Contacts and e-mail apps as the 5mx. Id so, then the upgrades are both needed.

Mike,
Indeed, the Psion site is terrible for someone just trying to look for a specific upgrade or patch. Since I've got all these patches and upgrades for the Revo/5mx, I wonder if we can just upload them to the doftware section here? They are too large to use as an attachment. Having them here would save us a lot of needless back and forth on how to use the Psion web site.:)

Jim,
I've never quite fathomed the 'library' section here. It still seems to be in the old "psionplace.com" section and having briefly read the section about 'uploading' software, it appears there isn't actually any software there - only links to the programs' original download sites. This is fine while the original site remains valid, but otherwise....
I'm quite happy to put these various patches on my website if you want to let me have a list of them (or the actual files).

I thought that these fixes had been incorporated into the latest versions running on the netbook, hence my question.

I assume that we are talking about the Email Synchronization Update? If so, Psion's website says it is for PsiWin 2.3 and 2.3.1 (not that that is likely to mean a great deal!) so I would suggest you try without it, as you are using 2.3.3, and, if you do find it is necessary, you can then install it.
Installing this release resolves the following issues:
- There was no warning if you attempted to synchronize when the Email Synchronization software was not installed on your Psion.
- An email copied from the email Inbox to the Draft folder did not appear in the PC’s Draft folder after synchronizing.
- Synchronization log reports are now more comprehensive.
- Email Synchronization could not run multiple synchronization tasks.
- Emails with no body text would not synchronize.
- Emails were sometimes duplicated in the Inbox.
- Disconnecting the machine during synchronization moved all emails in the Inbox to the trash folder.
- PsiWin could not be uninstalled after Email Synchronization had been installed and uninstalled.
- Emails with HTML content were not synchronized from Outlook.
- Emails created on the Psion and then converted to PCmails did not synchronize.
- Emails created on the Psion and then moved to another folder were not synchronized to the PC.
- The Psion occasionally crashed after running an email synchronization task.

That or the other update, I have started playing with the Revo as I have not got all the gear for the Series 5. I am also going to try and sync my Mobile to the organiser, dont know how easy that is. I am finding the Revo interesting but really want to really get to grips with the Series 5. Any advice is always welcome, I think what is a pain with theRevo is no expansion which is a huge shortcoming. I probably have too much d/l into it and that is only from the Psion cd. I have not d/l anything from any other sites.

Actually, I was talking about the Contacts duplicate patch, and whether it was required for a latest OS netbook connected to PsiWin 2.3.3.

I wii try therevo without the patch first then d/l some contacts and see what happens. I will then try it with the patch and see if there is difference. I was impressed with the phone function and transferring the sim data. Being able to back it up edit it and re transfer it to the pone is pretty neat.
