Does anyone know if the sound jack will output to headphones in stereo if I get a 3/32" to 1/8" stereo adapter? What's the little copper piece on the left side of the jack? Is that for the mic?

Or, does anyone know where to get the Mic/earphone combo? I'm trying to output MIDI to a sound system with my mobilepro.

Thanks,
Anthony

The audio/mic socket on MobilePro looks like a standard headset jack - get a headset from Fry's Electronics or BestBuy, for example. It's different from regular headphone jacks - it's smaller in size.

P.S.: Don't try headsets from mobile phones - those won't work.

okachris,

Thanks for the reply! I picked up a 3/32" stereo jack from radio shack, and it works in one side. I think the other "side" of the jack is actually for the mic. I did some digging, and NEC used to offer a mic/"earphone" (not stereo) unit that fit into this jack.

I was just using it for MIDI, so it was no big deal, but I certainly wouldn't try listening to MP3s through it.

FYI

I am using a samsung cellphone mike/earphone combo with my 780 and not only does music play well (if mono) but the mic also works for recording. I suspect most handsfree sets would work, and they are much cheaper than NEC's ear/mike combo.

Enjoy!

p.s. no adapter required, as cell phone plugs are same size as mobilepro's outlet.

In addition...

I tried an adapter with standard headphones and found if you withdraw the plug slightly you can get output to both sides... not stereo for real, but not bad for mp3's!

I'm using an Earphone/mic combo for a Cellphone and it gets really good sound quaility, including some deep bass, from my 770. I'm considering making a two sided mono Headphone set out of two of this particular set. I'll give the model # when i find the Box. Its made by Sanyo and is sold at Wal-Mart for about $8. Also you can find earphones with the smaller plug at Radio Shack.

I went to RadioShack and bought the 3/32 inch mono jack. I wired an old pair of Walkman headphone into the jack in parallel. Then to compensate for the length, I epoxied a couple of tiny fiber washers onto the shaft. Now it was easy to plug in the headphones all the way until they stop. And I got real pretty decent music too.

I used the Windows CE media player and saved the files in WMA format...worked really great till some dummy stole my 780.

heheh, yeah I remember back in like late 1999 when I had my mp770.

I did something like wiring a headphone to the mini adaptor and wired both L/R side of the headphone to get sound on both side.

sounds decent. and to some casual listener they don't realize it's not stereo.

man, the new MobilePro 900 finally got smart and slap in stereo jack. drooooool. $899... :(

I know this is an old post, but I'd like to ask for which models of Samsung cellphone is the mike/earphone combo that you're using with the MP780? I've tried out the Nokia headsets as well as some Samsung headsets that are available locally. Both play mp3 music well when I pull back the plug a little but the mics wouldn't work for voice recording on my MP770 either with the plug pulled back or fully inserted.

Is there a technique for activating the mic on these headsets? I've tried recording without pressing the mic button, pressing it once before recording, and pressing it during the entire recording, but all I get is some hissing sound on playback.

Thanks.

The small phone jack is wired for mono out only. I'm not sure about recording through the jack...

Thanks for the reply Rich. Upon closer inspection of NEC's MC-EM1 shown in the first link below, it's got a circular metallic ring contact at the base of the plug, unlike Nokia headsets. Most likely it's meant to contact with the "little copper piece on the left side of the jack" on the MP that the thread starter has described in his post.

I recall one of the headsets for Samsung mobiles that I've tried (it was a replacement model, not an original Samsung) has also got the ring contact, but still, the mic didn't work, or probably I had just not plugged it in well, that is, the connection for the mic could have been loose. I'll try it out again on my next trip to the mall.

By the way, the cheapest price for the MC-EM1 that I've found so far on the net is indicated in the second link below. I had inquired with them last week, but still haven't received a reply yet.

uh-oh... I think the 2nd link is an outdated catalog page of codemicro, seems that they're not offering the MC-EM1 anymore.

Tested it yesterday, the metallic ring at the base of the plug of the Samsung headset is smaller, wouldn't fit into the recessed receptacle around the jack on the MP770, that's why the plug couldn't be fully inserted.

Just wanted to maximize the use of the voice recording function of the MP770, otherwise if the MC-EM1 is still that pricey and rare, I might just settle with those mp3 player/voice recorder/USB flash drive combos.
