Gold Card compatibility?

Can anyone tell me whether a "Gold Card 56k + Fax / 10Mb Ethernet" card should work as a modem with a 5mx and the Psion PC Card Adaptor?

The card works OK in a Win98 laptop, as both modem and network adaptor, but just makes a repeating low pitched 'beep' in the PC Card Adaptor. This is with mains power and is irrespective of whether the 5mx is connected. Needless to say, there is no response from the modem using Comms.

I don't know whether or not the PC Card Adaptor is actually in working order :)

I know a 56K + Ethernet 10/100 combine IT gold card does not work as a modem with the PC Card adaptor and a 5mx, as I tried it myself and experienced the same results as Mike.

I do recall Psion mentioning the PC Card adaptor supported modems only and a limited selection at that (e.g. no problems with gold cards and a 3mx or 5mx but a US Robotics X-Jack 28k modem would only ever work with the 3mx).
