Question about the Memopad / Textpad / DocumentsToGo on the T|T. Are they able to edit text files and documents stored on a SD card?
For example...I store information in various *.txt files on my SD card on my computer. If I plug that right into T|T will the programs see it?
I would hate to have to sync up and chuck it into a palm PDB before I can edit the files, and have to extract them again later...

I have docs togo 4.0 on my m515, and I have the apps on the palm card, and all my docs & spreadsheets on the SD card, I edit them, delete them, add them with no problem

Hey thanks for that information! Very useful!
My next logical question would be...when you unplug the SD card from your m515 and plug it into the computer, are the files in native word *.doc format? Or are they in a DocumentsToGo format?
I'm just wondering if I edit the files on m515-SD card, would I be able to edit them on computer using a SD card reader.

In V4.0, you will have to transfer to the Desktop using the conduit. Same is true for Quick Office or my personal favorite, Wordsmith. I thought that I heard that one of the Palm suites was moving toward native document support.

So even simply *.txt files you have to sync up to the desktop? Or can *.txt be edited directly?

the latest quickoffice supports native file formats
if you send a text file over from a computer eg laptop IR or BT, it either gets converted into memopad or docs to go I think :)
Well that's what happened with the m105 .. i haven't tried doing that with the tungsten - never really had to.

I was just going to sync across a .txt and see for you but my hotsync has stopped working:mad: :( i'll try when i get it working again! For .doc & .xls and .ppt you could def only do it with Quick Office 6. I'm sure you can edit .txts somehow tho............

Just open word/excel files within doc to go on your desktop and you can edit/save any documnets and automatically update on next hot sync on your TT
I have been doing this since i got TT and DTG for nearly 5 months now
eg.
let's say
ABCword document will save as ABC.pdb within DTG on your desktop as well as ABC .doc on your desktop (default my documents or your assigned folder)
i.e. ABC will be in two formats .pdb for TT DTG and .doc for your standard word on your desktop
In future one single ABC.doc for both palm TT as well as word desktop(native support) and i believe dataviz is working on that will release with the next update

Thanks for your help people :) I think I'm not gonna like this Syncing business...just too clumsy and have to have hotsync set up to view and edit files.........
I think I'll stick to my PocketPC, that way I can edit files with TextMaker on my desktop, chuck it on an SD card, and slot it right into the PocketPC and edit and view them without syncing...
A lot of these decisions were gonna help me decide whether I'm getting a TungstenT or the iPAQ1910...I think iPAQ is the go for my purposes!

NOOOO! Don't give up on the TT! I did install a txt file but was told there was no program to read it. However as said before Quick Office 7 Premier would meet all your needs.

Don't give up on palm just yet! You have to remember Palm and Windows are different operating systems. PPC and Windows are basically the same operating system- so yes PPC would have better native file compatability. But for actual data compatibilty it has been said many a time that Palm is more compatible. Read here the story:
Now, Office Documents Look Better
On Palms Than on Pocket PCs

Palm is for handheld- windows is for PC/Laptop.

I basically don't like the whole syncing thing. Plus ALL documents on the SD have to be under the Category "CARD" which defeats the purpose of Category in the first place.
Too late, bought an iPAQ1910
My only palm had been the IIIe, TungstenT still hasn't won me back over to the PalmOS side of the fence.

You'll be back, after spending a lot, I mean a lot of money for software, and not to mention the fact that you are stuck with all Microsoft Software, where Palm has thousands of programs all very cheap if not free, Well has they say, you made your bed, now go to sleep. But I think you'll be sorry!!!!! Good Luck

Sounds like a poorly researched purchase. Both units "sync" the iPaq is simply a little more automated. There is a program (free) that will make the Palms work the exact same as ActiveSync. If editing documents like word and excel was the main purchase, the iPaq was flat out the wrong one to choose. Many, many reviews of pointed out the flaws of the PPC doing documents versus the Docs To Go solution (which comes free with the Tungsten). I know my handhelds very well as that is what I sell everyday, and in your situation - I would have had you get the Palm, based almost solely on the editing needed. Alo, the Palm community is much better, especially developer support about actually being able to get questions answered. Plus the size difference, and the 1910 is not expandable and the speaker is quiter and not as full-ranged. The one really, really cool thing about the 1910 is the replaceable battery, and the available ($50) cradle (it doesn't come with one - the Tungsten does) that will charge an extra battery. Eitehr way - good luck and I hope your purchase works out well for you.
