I need help. My brand new IPAQ 5455 is dead. It doesn't boot anymore. When I press the 'reset' button at the bottom, I see the blue HP welcome screen, but then the device went black and nothing happens. I then get a message on my PC (running WinXP Pro) saying that it has detected an "Unknown USB Device". I tried to connect to the device using ActiveSync, but it couldn't find the device. Now I am stuck with a dead IPAQ (brand new.. only 2 days old). I just want to restore it to its original state with Windows Pocket PC. Does anybody know how??? If not, I have to send it back to HP. Thanks.

Try this, hold down the reset buttom for 10 secons and then let up. That should return it to factory settings. If that dosn't work return it.

Same thing happened to me, with the same Ipaq. It was a battery issue. Removed the battery...several times....and finally got it to charge. It kept going black due to being totally discharged. Wouldn't even work with the AC cable at first. But, with some tinkering it did start charging and all was ok.
Good luck.

On that same note, have you charged it at all?

You need to hard reset. if it is brand new - and does not cause by appliation , you should return it. i experienced this, sent the device to HP and HP fixed it.

I agree with jkwee. If a hard reset doesn't do it, don't drive yourself crazy, return it to HP to be repaired. BTW, I believe you can hard reset by pressing the the lower 2 buttons and the reset pinhole simultaneously.

or for faster service take it back to where you got it. I know places like CompUSA will give you a new one.

Thanks for all responses... I got a tech support on the phone yesterday and she had determined that it was more than just the battery problem. She sent me a box via Airborne this morning so that I could return it to HP for repair. I can't believe this... The unit was working for only two days and locked up on me... I will definitely think twice about buying another Pocket PC...

I had the same problem and tech support sent me a battery and it did not fix the problem because it is a stand by power issue in the iPAQ.

Go to Start> settings> System> Power> Standby

and reduce the Standby Period from what it is to a lower number. There is also a patch from HP to prevent this number from being automatically reset to the max.
