I have a friend who has an Ipaq 3870. The unit will charge when connected to ac however it will not charge usb only. The charge light is lit only when connected to ac. We have tried various procedures to correct this problem including trying different usb cables and cradles all of which worked fine with my 5455. We have also performed multiple soft and hard resets to no avail. The 3870 is still configured with the original rom revision.

HELP!

A long shot here, but check and see if there's any power management setting for the usb port that will cause the port to power down when idle.

Thanks. I am the friend with the 3870. The original rom revision does not contain that option. I am hoping that the upgraded rom, when I apply it, will have that option and maybe it will fix the problem. Any suggestions or caveats you may have about performing the upgrade? I realize that all applications will have to be reinstalled after the upgrade.

Sorry, i was a little unclear, i meant checking usb port power management setting on the "desktop".

Sorry about that. I had checked on multiple pc(s). The final two that I checked worked fine with the USB port and cable for my friend's 5455 but failed for my 3870. I am hoping that it is not a hardware issue. I was hoping that maybe it was similar to an issue that happens with the old palm 505 and some 515. They needed to be fully drained in order to synch at all usb, but I let the main battery drain to 0 and then hard and soft resset but still no synch......

I am at a loss!

I have resolved the problem with the help of stevemg. There was a post regarding screen protectors for the ipaq pda. On the same site, there was also offered a usb retractable sync cable. I borrowed stevemg's cable and it synced and RECHARGED! Yes the recharge light lit. Funny that the plug on this third party device was more reliable than any other cable produced by Compaq or otherwise. I even tried a second cable by the same manufacturer and it worked just fine. Needless to say, I ordered one immediately!
