i got my palm in june of last year...worked wonderfully until feb 1. then it stopped hotsyncing...emailed palm...they said to reinstall software after uninstalling it....i did. they said to reset the palm...i did....they said to get a new cradle...i did. when i try to hotsync it says....cannot hotsync because the com port is being used by another application...only its not. my computer says that there is nothing on the com port....the com port itself works just fine with nothing on it or other things on it, but not with the palm. i don't want to call them..$25 a pop sounds like a lot, if i don't have to. any ideas as to what i should try...is this my palm or my computer (compaq)?????? why would it suddenly stop working????thanks...

Stresl - Hi how u doing??
I have the answer to your problems (I hope)
I had exactly the same problem about 2 months ago - I got the same message when i tried to sync. After trial and error I fixed the problem.....
The solution: Go to the "Prefs" aplication that is on your palm. Choose the "Buttons" folder in this aplication. Then press the "Default" option to reset all the hard buttons on the pda to default. This should then correct your problem.
If that doesnt work, see if you can sync by loading the hotsync application on the pda and then pressing on the hotsync logo that is on your pda screen while in the cradle.
Let me know if you managed to fix your sorrows !!

Thanks for the help. Still no luck though I tried everything mentioned at least twice. Guess I have to call the Palm folks, hopefully they'll be able to help. still get the message (unable to hotsync because com port is in use by another application) and though the hotsync icon is on my computer, the little icon that used to come on when it was working, does not (you know the one with the three circles that makes the little musical sound). Tried installing on another computer, and still no luck so I think its the palm. Thanks again

Does the terminal at the end of your Hotsync Cradle cable have a connector that fits into the rectangular USB port on the back of your computer? Or does it have a connector (Serial) with nine small holes?
I suspect you are using USB. If so you need to uninstall the PalmDesktop. On your PC go to the lower left "START" then to "SETTING" "CONTROL PANEL" "ADD and REMOVE" Software. Remove the PalmDesktop. Turn off your computer. Disconnect all of the USB devices, printers, Palm cradle etc from your computer. Start the computer and go to Palm.com and download the latest version of the Desktop linked HERE. (http://www.palm.com/software/desktop/)
Install the software on your PC. Connect your Palm Cradle to the PC and follow the prompts to install the Newly found Palm.
If this is exactly what you have done in the past you have done your best.

I'm wondering if you recently installed new software, or someone downloaded something from the NET and confused your USB ports, If you are useing a com port then there might be a problem with a mouse driver or a modem driver. Especially if the drivers were recently upgraded. Worst you may have a worm or virsus. You can down load AVG antivirsus from the Net for free.
Keep us posted.:o

Javier,
the directions for the cure that I offered to stresl is in this thread go back a bit.
Your situation may be different. tell me what happens when you try to HotSync. Have you been able to HotSync and now you are having a problem for the first time?
Do you get any messages either on the Palm or the PC when the Sync fails?

the best thing to do is uninstall your desktop & reinstall, make sure that you are on 4.1 if not download it here.

after that it should be fine..

Javier,
Even though you have a 515 you may be suffering from a problem that comes about when a static electric charge confuses the USB control software. Generally when this happens the Palm will not USB Sync with any PC, but it will sync from a Serial Cradle or by InfraRed. Serial Cradles are hard to find.
The Problem is called SUDS. I have placed a thread below that contains a method for curing the problem.
Best regards,
Doc

JB,
Have you done a soft reset on your Palm?
What OS are you running on the PC?

Hi Dr
I am using palm v. 4.1 on the palm and Win XP pro on the desktop I got the sync working on a serial cradle I had after upgrading to v4.1 However I still cannot sync to the usb. Basically nothing happens when I press the cradle sync button. I have done a reset (soft) just now and nothing happened. On the sync menu in the system tray I have usb, serial and network selected. network selected itself when I upgraded the software I usually had usb and serial ticked. Mystery to me - any thoughts?

Your problem can be either of two: 1) SUDS. Syncs by Serial but not USB. That is a SUDS symptom.
2). The USB has failed to recognize the palm.
Have you turned off the PC and taken off ALL USB connected devices including any hub connectors; then restart and add the Palm first? Please have the Palm in the Cradle when you connect the USB to the PC.
Do you have the Palm logged to and XP account that has given you administrative privedledges? It will not run if you are not in the administrator position.

I recently upgraded from Windows Me to XP. Since that time I've been unable to hotsync. I've tried uninstalling, disconnecting all usb stuff, and installing 4.1. I believe my problems lies with the usb port. When I plug in the cradle USB connector, XP doesn't recognize it as new hardware. In addition, the system device manager lists it as a problem with an exclamation mark. When I try to update the driver with new files from palm.com, it states code 10. I've tried a soft reset. Considered SUDS, but never had a previous problem until the upgrade. Also I have an E cradle. When I try to hotsync, the palm tries but the computer just beeps. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Rich
Not sure why, but I tried exiting the hotsync manager and then restarting it from the program menu. It worked, my palm is now hotsyncing normally. Still unsure about why my computer couldn't recognize the usb port before, but I guess it really doesn't matter now.

I have lost my conduit for Memopad
I had installed backup buddy, which I am choosing not to keep
as I am unsure if I actually need that yet.
Noted that memo had not been backed up since I had put it on a month ago and the conduit didn't show on the customize Hotsynch.
Any cllues as to what to do next
I need to do a big purge of all prrior palm stuff past
but dread the hunt for all the problems I will need to go thru in that process
Thanks Rich:confused:

[using Win98SE - XP users ignore all])
A couple months ago I experienced the "stopped-syncing after months OK" problem. Got the "complete uninstall" instructions (emailed by Palm) and, noticing registry mods in the instructions, immediately imported a two-week old copy of my registry (REGEDIT/File menu/import). 'Worked. Considering all the crap on that list of instructions, no better recommendation can be given.
'No help if you haven't been backing up your registry, but when things are going well, THAT's when you ought to do a backup. Prior to installs is good--you can back out of the installation as if it never happened (run REGEDIT/File menu/Export, choose a path/useful name, backup). So start backing up your registry (when everything is working as expected) and, should a hotsync problem occur, BEFORE a complete Desktop uninstall, try importing a known-to-be-good registry.
