I like to get this straight right away before I get myself lost again. I did a search and still didn't come to answers... What is:
Pocket PC
HPC2000
WinCE 3.0
Anything else? I am aware that Palm is an OS that is popular for PDAs and has many third-party software. Palm is also a name of a PDA hardware.
Also, can you tell me hardware terms, what is what, meaning:
HPC means Handheld PC, e.g. clamshell (is that correct?)
Again, I like to get my understanding right with those terms. I have seen that some terms cross-link with other hardwares, so there is no "exact" label for such hardware?

"A Pocket PC is a handheld device that enables you to store and retrieve e-mail, contacts, appointments, play multimedia files, games, exchange text messages with MSN Messenger, browse the Web, and more. You can exchange, or synchronize, information with a desktop computer."

"Pocket PC and Handheld PC refer to specific types of mobile devices while Windows CE is the operating system that is at the heart of all Handheld PCs and Pocket PCs. It is important to note that Pocket PCs and Handheld PCs are information appliances that are more similar to a TV than a desktop PC - when a new version of Windows CE is available, it is not possible to just upgrade that portion of a Pocket PC or Handheld PC."
"A Pocket PC is a class of device that has a quarter VGA (320x240) screen and contains a consistent package of integrated applications, wireless and wired connectivity options, and Win32 APIs for developers.
A Handheld PC is a class of devices that have half VGA (640x240) or full size (640x480 or 800x600) screens with or without an integrated keyboard and contains a consistent package of integrated applications, wireless and wired connectivity options, and Win32 APIs for developers.
Windows CE is a compact, modular operating system that was designed from the ground up to support a broad range of client devices combining the flexibility and reliability of Windows with real-time processing support. Some examples of Windows CE-based devices that Microsoft is defining include the Handheld PC, Pocket PC, X-Box, WebTV, MSN Web Companion, eBook Reader, Windows-based Terminal, and Smart Phone. Anyone can use the Microsoft Platform Builder product to build a custom embedded device based on the Windows CE operating system. Hundreds of companies are doing this and have built devices ranging from livestock feeding machines and milk analyzers to point of sale terminals to manufacturing process and security controllers to bank check processing systems."

Thanks for the link. I was looking for such links like this!
New questions...
ROM is something for the device itself, more like firmware?
RAM is for the OS, Pocket Word, etc AND any working docs or downloads?
If it "depends" on what hardware I am looking at, I am interest in the NEC MobilePro 790 (or the new coming 900 in May).
Thanks.
Chuck
ADDED :
Is HPC (or H/PC) means THE Handheld PC with/without a keyboard (e.g., NEC MP790)?
HPC2000 IS a M$ OS? It IS THE WinCE 3.0 ? It is designed (and made) for HPCs?

I belive that ROM is for the operating system. However, it is possible to store other things there. The RAM is the space where you put most applications and files.

It appears that the Handheld PC has an "integrated keyboard."
"Microsoft's response was the release of the Handheld PC 2000, which includes the improved Windows CE 3.0 operating system along with three additional programs to the suite of built-in Microsoft software."

I hope this clears things up.

There are three incarnations of Windows CE 3.0, to my knowledge.
a) "Pocket PC 2000": Predecessor to the current Pocket PC 2002 OS. Used on 240x320 screen devices, such as the iPAQ 31xx / 36xx series as well as Casio's E-115 / E-125.
b) "Handheld PC 2000": Used in Handheld PC / sub-notebook form factor devices, still the latest H/PC Windows CE yet. Same GUI as H/PC Pro devices. Seems the device class dies slowly...
c) "Windows CE 3.0 Embedded": Used in Casio's BE-300 Pocket Manager. Custom GUI, does not have much in common with the Pocket PC devices.
