I use a mac G4, and I installed the palm 4.0 software, which works fine, and the zire works fine, but when I went to sync, there is NOTHING listed in the connection settings window. Nothing to select. And I can't sync! I've heard there are problems with macs and palm, but does anyone know a way around this? PLEASE HELP! Thanks.

I am going to assume you have never been able to sync these two units.
You may have done this but if you haven't check the Palm.com site for the latest MAC USB Driver for the Zire. If that has been done.....
Have you created a user on the Palm Desktop? If not create a new user.
If you had a UserName and you had any connection witht he Zire you should have a user name on the Zire. You can find out by looking in the upper right hand corner of the HotSync screen on the Palm. If it's blank or says "Welcome.", then there's no user associated with the device. When you HotSync initially, it should ask you to identify the Palm's owner.
If you had set up a new user and there was data in it you may want to change to a new user name. If you choose to create a new user, you should be able to export the data and then import it into the new profile.
After you have imported all the data to the new user the hotsync should work. You can then delete the old user information.
