Ok, first let me admit that I'm a little undereducated on the PDAs. I have researched the issue for the last two days and I'm going to be buying one within the next month. I have decided on the Dell Axim 400mhz.
I want to be able to browse the internet. From what I gather I can do this by connecting to my cell phone... But, how difficult is this and is there a way that I could (when at home and cell phone service is pretty much not there..) connect to my normal ISP through a phone line on dial up?

Please let me know. thanks!!:)

You can buy a cable for your cell phone and connect to surf.

do a search, there are a number of companies making cables.

Check with your provider to see if you can web browse on their service or if you will chew up miinutes as a dial up. Varies by company.

I have not yet done this but plan to in the next few months. Sorry, can't help with a tech walk through.

Before you buy your Axim, go to Apex redline.com and Fatwallet.com to check for coupons and discounts. Dell will run daily specials and you can catch as much as $125.00 off the retail price with discounts and stackable coupons.

These sites have also helped me score hot deals on cf and sd cards.

Brighthand.com has a thread on make your own screen savers. It is simple and works really well. I posted a link here a while back.

If you have an IR port on your mobile it's the easiest way by far to connect it to the Axim, no need for cables. Pretty slow though, 9600 something with normal GSM, but excellent for email retreiving. Many internet suppliers only accept calls from your home phoneline these days (or if you have a broadband connection that you can't call the normal way) but there are a few providers that works fine while travelling around - in the UK I use www.connectfree.co.uk, in Sweden flashback.se. When looking for a free ISP watch out so you don't have to install any files on your desktop that will force you to use that specific phonenumber...no good. These above just gives you a phonenumber + eventually POP/SMTP-servernames after registration.

thank you both very much!! that helps alot. I'll check for the discounts and on the cables.
I really want the axim just because it's cool... but if it can serve a purpose such as retrieving email all the much better. plus i can use it for taking notes in meetings and keeping my work calendar handy at all times.

i'm sure i'll be back once i get it...
