oh no -just hit a snag - when i try to remove a program by tapping on the add /remove in control panel my psion says " searching for installed programs and then just resets. I tried a soft reset but it has not helped.
Does anyone have any ideas?

PS
Back up from last week maybe an option but then i loose what i have done during the course of this week, and who knows if this will fix the problem.
Hope i have other alternatives

This is ugly, but it should work.
1. Back up the machine onto CF
2. Do a hard reset.
3. Reinstall the programs that you want.
4. Copy over the data files that you want.
5. Pray that you did not miss anything.
Good Luck,
Marty

hmm but i only have one CF disk (16 meg) i just ordered a 128 meg CF disk but it has not arrived yet, thus i will need to load my OS onto the CF disk and won't have enough room for a complete back up.
Shucks!

Hi all !!
With regards to the above problem - I fixed it - i deleted all my software on my 16 meg CF, copied my OS back on to it , copied my agenda file and price lists and spreadsheets onto the remaining 1.8 meg and then did a hard reset..
Was up until 5:30 this morning reinstalling all the software again.
Anyway i did one thing wrong - I did not copy the correct contacts file. I then did a syncronisation with Outlook and thought that that would put my contacts back in - but to no avail.
I did a backup about a week ago - could anyone please tell me what file i will need to extract to get my contacts back.
I never renamed the file so it should be the original file that contacts keeps all the data in.
Once i have done this my psion would have been completely restored and i can do a complete backup again.
Thank you

It's a bit late now, but I recall reading a solution to your problem:
If a non-SIS file finds its way into the C:\System\install\ folder, then
Add/Remove will tend to crash horribly.
The solution is to find this non-SIS (or I suppose corrupt SIS) file, and then
delete it. If there are no files not ending in .sis then the best option it
trial and error (with appropriate divide-and-conquer search method, for N sis
files it should only take SqrRoot(N) attempts to find the faulty file).
Alternative would be to compare the folder with your backup, and try removing
any new (or modified) files.

Hi Chris!
Yes i think you are right, actually i did go into the install folder in the system directory and clicked on a couple of the sis files only to get an error message on each one - wish i wrote down the error message something like instaltor error or something like that, but anyway it's all fixed now except for my contacts
My next problem is to find where my contacts data is on my back up. As before i formated my psion i copied the contacts.ini file thinking that , thats where the data is stored.

Sadly no, the .INI file is definitely NOT where Contacts (or any sensible program) would store it's data. INI files are used to store user Preferences, not anything more.
Usually programs store their data as a file in Documents, but certain programs (like Contacts) only have one single repositary for data.
In the case of Contacts, it stores it as "C:\System\Data\Contacts.cdb".
