Has anyone had experience using a 5mx or MC218 with the Motorola P280 (or T280, the European model version, I believe)? I have the basic IR connection OK, can download/edit the phonebook, get phone information, but I can't send SMS messages. The phone doesn't like it, and I get an error message on the MC218 asking me to check various settings (which I have). I've tried both the "Basic GSM phone" and "Motorola L7089/Timeport" settings, to no avail.

BTW, I'm on the T-Mobile network in the US.

Do you have the SMS centre number correctly entered in the Email application's SMS settings? The number is normally read from the phone but it must be in full international format, which for the US would start with 1, but excluding the normal leading plus sign. Some phones do not store the number in this format and it must be edited in the Psion's settings.

Having said that, with some phones (including my Siemens S35i) it just doesn't work - I have to use PhoneMan Pro from http://www.zenobyte.com for SMS messaging.

Mike,

thanks for this. I forgot to mention: I *have* been trying using Phoneman Pro. I also have both Connectivity Updates installed (v1.1 from Psion and v2.0 for GPRS). I assume that Phoneman Pro doesn't need to have the GPRS setup installed first for SMS - it should work right away. Incidentally, according to your article "GSM PHONE CONNECTION RESULTS TABLES" SMS with the T280 is just not possible. Should I give up then? Would Seem like the only phone that can be used in the US with SMS, tri-band, GSM, and GPRS is the new Ericsson T68. Pity - that phone doesn't get very good reviews for reception.

Incidentally, according to your article "GSM PHONE CONNECTION RESULTS TABLES" SMS with the T280 is just not possible It isn't actually "my" article, the tests were carried out by Craig Chambers of Psion Teklogix who sent the file to me. However, if he has found SMS messaging to be impossible with the netPad, which is the device he was using, it is a fairly safe assumption that it won't work with other Psion models.
