Hi,
I recently purchased a Toshiba 512MB XtraSpeed Compact fash card for my Netbook as I had read good reviews about it.

e.g. http://www.dp-now.com/Features/Peripheral_reviews/perif6/perif6.html

I have now dicovered that when using the Sound Recorder with this card, I get an annoying "click" sound about once a second when making a recording. Playing back of sound files, recorded on other cards (or C), that I copied to the Toshiba works fine. The problem only seems to effect recording. I have had a few glitches while installing software although I am not sure if that is CF related!

I have also tested Sandisk, Hitachi and ExtreMemory cards and I have no such problem with them.

Otherwise, I have not noticed any other problems, yet I do use the Recorder app so it is very annoying!

Has anyone else got a Toshiba card and can confirm or deny this problem? If it is just mine, I will have to get it exchanged, if it is a generic Toshiba problem, I will need to get a different make (suggestions)?

Regards

Peter

Its an old confirmed bug in Netbook/S7 that you cant record directly to a CF-Card. It can be done on the 5mx.

Its a pity, because the combination of voicerecording and a instanton PC with a superb keyboard would be the perfect journalist tool. but it seem to be a fundamental thing in the way the sound system is working in the netbooks internal design.

Thanks for your message, but I can record fine with other makes of CF card! Maybe the problem you are talking about has been fixed in the latest OS-Version.

Can anyone else confirm that they can record normally onto CF with their Netbook?

In case you're interested, maybe this MP3 recording app will fix the problem:

HIGHLY recommended.

David.

Hi David,
thanks for the link and I just tried it. Unfortunately, I get the same noise with that programme, as well

You could perhaps record onto the C drive, and then move the recording to CF later?

I think the giveaway is that the card is some sort of special 'high speed' card - its just not as compatible with netBook as others I'd guess. Go for an exchange for a more 'standard' type of card.

Alternatively, it may be the large size of card that is the problem. Larger cards have slower access times, and may simply not be fast enough to stream audio onto.

Peter, there's some very interesting information here:
http://www.pscience5.net/Hints_Tips/Compact_Flash.htm
which suggests that the way you format your compact flash card has a BIG effect on read/write. Maybe you need to change the format parameters, re-format and try again.

NB: The bigger the cluster size the less efficient use of space you make on the CF card, but the faster it can read/write em.
