Is anyone having trouble with charactor recognition with Graffiti on the Palm IIIc? Sometimes it's good, and other times it worthless. Is there an app or patch that can be loaded to help?

Poor character recognition can be corrected simply by making bigger and "sharper" characters or aligning your digitizer.
Lets blame the digitizer! Go to your main application screen and find the Pref Icon, tap in, go to the upper right, drop down the menu, tap "Digitizer." Make an effort to hit the targets dead center. I know one very well know Palm software developer that uses a tooth pick to hit the center. You may find it necessary to realign the Digitizer weekly depending on how much you use the Palm.

I'll try the toothpick. I seem to have problems with it daily. I had a IIIe for two years and never had problems with it.

The most common reason for the problem on the III series handhelds is a poor connection on the cable from the digitizer to the mother board. Let that go for later when the screen goes nuts on you.
In the mean time consider loading an app called DigiFix, Suretap or AutoDigi2. All are on Palmgear.com. Demo one and see if there is an improvement. The Palm V/Vx units get so bad that you can't get to the digitizer or Welcome app by normal means.

you could also try an app called TealScript. I haven't tried it much myself, but it sounds like a good concept. it lets you "train" the graffiti to your own handwriting, or something like that. You could also upgrade to OS 4.1. I did that for other reasons, but I noticed a dramatic improvement in handwriting recognition.

try turning the brightness down and see if you have as much problem.

Try a new message input system called Message Ease available from PalmGear. Once you get familiar with it, it beats graffiti input in speed and accuracy.

Another alternative is a great app called Jot (www.cic.com) which uses more natural characters in place of the graffiti characters. It also allows you to use the entire screen rather than just the graffit area to write the characters, as well as providing the option to actually see your written characters on-screen so you can see what the digitizer "sees."

It's a little expensive itself, but I seem to recall CIC offering bundles of its products for a decent price overall. I think I picked up Jot, WordComplete (to speed text input by using a form of autocomplete) and QuickNotes for 39.99. (I just checked their site, and if you go to their software store, there's a graphic of a monochrome Palm screen with "Special Promotions." Click there and it'll take you to the bundled packages, one of which still has the 3 apps I mentioned for the same 39.99.)

The demo of Jot alone may convince you to make the investment.

TRY THE ONLY SOLUTION THAT WORKED FOR ME!!!
===================================

Using: X-Master V 1.5, 13-Oct-2002
With: Afterburner III V 3.1

CONFIGURE AFTERBURNER III WITH THESE SETTINGS:
=============================================

'0 ws core' = ENABLED (ON)
'Fast Mpx' = ENABLED (ON)
'Fast Page' = ENABLED (ON)
'Slow Mpx' = DISABLED (OFF)

'Adjust Ticks' = ENABLED (ON)
'Default' = 16MHz (Note: 10Mhz also works but slower).
'Find' = 16Mhz (Note: 10Mhz also works but slower).
'LCD/n' = 7

'Accel' = ALWAYS
'Slow' = NEVER
'LClk/2' = NEVER

TEST RESULTS
============

Palm OS: 4.1 (but should work on 3.5 too).
Model: Palm IIIc

Brightness vs. Digitizer performance:
000 % Flying response! (OK)
025 % Excellent response! (OK)
050 % A bit interrupted response
075 % Interrupted response (X)
100 % Very slow response (X)

Precision: Perfect no matter the brightness!

Speed achieved in overclocking: 152%

I hope that this help you as much as it helped me to
eliminate that ugly digitizer error which made Graffiti
a pain in the ... and drawing or writing directly on
screen a myth... Good luck!
