hello - i guess this is the right place to ask this:
does there exist a newsreader such as Avantgo for Psion? i own a 5mx and a 7series (i use the 7 to read online quite a bit) but there are times when i need to log on briefly and would like to grab headlines and articles from the guardian.co.uk
any suggestions would be greatfully received
Cheers

You could perhaps try MobiPocket, news and e-book reader - freeware.

I haven't used it, though I've heard good reports. Not sure whether it does exactly what you want, but might be worth investigating.

No problem. I'd be interested to know your findings, though, so please post again if you have any feedback.
Thanks

yeah, i have just been checking out the site -
it seems that to have the enews reader you can only have fox news (seems a tad american) but i shall try it to see what i can tailor it for
for the ebooks, i have copies of tomeraider for my psions and they offer free texts/ebooks but for the mobipocket it seems you need to purchase the text/book
more investigation is needed as this is purely my impression on my initial visit
i shall post the findings
thanks again for your help

What an Angel you are Julie
MobiPocket does exactly what it says on the tin!
Once downloaded there are a number of NEws services including the BBC and The Register that can be used for downloading - shame they don't let you know this before
anyway, within just a few short minutes i now have news in my 7 series all nicely categorised and hyperlinked - thanks to you
very much appreciated
cheers

Hmmm, I don't know about that - see attachment!
Seriously, I'm glad that MobiPocket can fulfil your needs. I thought it might, but since I haven't used it, didn't want to promise too much.
Just another thing to add to my (already long) list of things to test!

I use Mobipocket both on my Psion7 and a Palm m515. I also have AvantGo on the Palm. One disadvantage of Mobipocket is that it ties you to a Windows PC for synchronisation, whereas AvantGo can synchronise over a modem, including a mobile phone on IR or Bluetooth. This is far more useful when away on a conference or on holiday. It also keeps us out of the clutches of the evil M$ :D
Another advantage of AvantGo is that it can be used to collect data, and I'm currently working on an application using this to collect attendance monitoring (register) data within a college. When I first started working with AvantGo they promised a Symbian version RSN, but that has been put back by Psion's withdrawal from the PDA market.
So what's really needed is an update to Mobipocket, but that doesn't fit the synchronisation model they have used.

I have been using Mobipocket since it came out. It is great for off line news reading, has lots of news outlets, IE BBC, USA Today, and many others. I agree with Nick though, it is tied to a PC so if you want to read the news, you have to go to your PC and plug in your Psion and it downloads automatically, no work involved, but it would be nice to do it directly. They also have lots of ebooks for small fee or some are free, so its a good site with lots of stuff.
Thanks,
Bobbyr

Mobipocket can also be used to read books in Palmreader format, so there are a large number available for free.

Sorry to delve this one up again but did start new thread until i searched for this. have installed Mobireader to Psion and bought a cheap book to try. The file downloaded to disc in a .PRC format that does not seem to want to copy over to Psion? What have I done wrong, and can i sort it? Any help greatly appricated.

Just copy it over using file manager on the PC. You can then open it by browsing for it from the eBooks section of MobiPocket, or it should appear on the list as Mobipocket seems to search the whole disk which is why it's a little slow at times.

....or are you dragging & dropping so PsiWin cannot recognise the file format to convert?

Psiwin converts or drags and drops all other types of file but the file for the mobipocket does not seem to go. It is in a format i have not seen boefore the properties include Type: ebook ms.dos name: THE#14A.PRC attributes archive ticked. I am sure it is all down loaded ok but am not 100% sure I have followed all the procedures correctly the web page is PDA general rather than psion specific. nigel

I normally right click when dragging & dropping so I can select Copy from the menu options, then PsiWin doesn't try to convert the file. Is this what you are doing?

No but did try this and did not realise you could. I had a little play about and the connection kept dropping even converting other files. In the end I uninstalled the mobipocket reader completly and now all is working OK? May try another sort!
