Could anyone point me to a description of how to install an Cicsco Aironet 340 card woking off an Ericsson WLAN Access Point A11D to a 3Com 812 ADSL router? I have tried various resources, such as Sylvester. org, which though helpful, talk in detail about Lucent-type cards which use different settings.
I would be very grateful for help with a Cisco card set-up.

Well, the Netbook side is very easy, providing you have the correct version of the OS installed.

You must make sure you have OS version: 1.05(450) Release 158
This is the only one that comes with th ethernet drivers installed.

Then go to control panels and choose the ethernet control panel

Create a new settings profile (based on standard settings) and set the settings as follows:
Name: <Whatever you want>
Configuration method: DHCP
Hostname: <blank>
Device: Cisco Aironet 3500/4800/340

Then Click on Options button and set the SSID to something you know, e.g: 101 (that is the factory default on most Access Points)

All the rest leave untouched. That should be it for the Netbook

Then go to your access point config pages and make sure that encryption is switched off and that the SSID is also set to 101, or whatever you chose it to be - must be the same code in the access point and the netbook. Also, make sure that the DHCP server in the Wireless access point is enabled. (I don't have this access point, but I imagine it should have this option in its config pages)

Switch on your netbook, open up Opera and try browsing to some page (don't forget to choose the new ethernet settings when it asks you how you want to connect!) Providing the rest of your ethernet (to you ADSL modem) is working, it should just go through without any further hitches...

Good Luck,
David.

A couple of comments:

Please don't spell my surname with a 'y' - its guaranteed to put my back up. I'm not annoyed, I just like to nip mis-spelling in the bud ;)

I do not list Cisco settings because there's next to nothing to set up - as Davidish says the only thing you can change in the Cisco driver is the SSID, whereas with the Lucent cars there's a ton of settings to fiddle with.

Davidish, the OS release you quote is not the only one to contain the ethernet drivers, and indeed the Malaybook castellar has cannot be upgraded anyway! The good news is that it does come with the drivers installed.

All very true. I was trying to limit potential for probs by saying it was the only (I should've said it was "the preferred"), I also (absent mindedly) didn't notice it was a Malaybook that castellar had (he PM'd me and that's how I got to this posting...)

Anyway, hope it all works for you Mr C.

David.

Thank you both very much. Sorry about the misspelling of your surname, diem! I had concluded from your site that the Cisco setup was as complex as the Lucent one, but that you just hadn't documented it....

Can't wait to get home to try it. I'll report back.

Thanks again

Miguel

Hi,

I've finally managed to make the Cisco Aironet 340 work with the Malaybook.

Here's the way I did it (if it can be of any help to anybody). This for a Malaybook, Cisco Aironet 340 card, Ericsson WLAN Access Point A11D connected to a 3Com 812 ADSL router, which also has a PC connected.
I did not change the Ericsson Accesspoint settings or the 3Com settings.

Go to control panels and choose the ethernet control panel

Create a new settings profile (based on Cisco rLan settings) and set the settings as follows:
Name: <Whatever you want>
Configuration method: Manual
Hostname: <blank>
Device: Cisco Aironet 3500/4800/340

Then Click on Options button and leave the SSID blank

Go to Addresses tab and fill in the data as given to you by your ADSL provider. Note that the IP address's last digit needs to be changed (up or down by one unit) if you already have another machine connected to ADSL. Otherwise the router gets confused.
Routing Tab: don't change
Advanced Tab: Encapsultaion unchecked
ARP cache set to 3000 secs

This now works pretty well (for both the PC and the Malaybook). Surfing is slightly slower than on the PC, using Opera 5.14. Email download is faster.

Please note that I am NOT an expert and I seem to be contradicting the advice given by more expert members (!) Maybe this setup just works for the Malaybook, Cisco card and Ericsson access point as delivered by Sita.

If you have any pointers on how this setup could be improved, I'll be glad to hear from you.

Thank you again for your troubles.

Miguel
