I have had a Palm IIIxe for almost 3 & 1/2 years. Occassionally, I would receive the "Fatal Alert" screen and have to hard reset my Palm.
Knowing, the IIIxe had a DRAM problem, I downloaded The DRAMTest from Palm and sure enough, mine was one of the effected models.
I installed the DRAM Patch per instructions and my Palm has never been the same.
Now, after I do a hard reset and resync, I can use my Palm only once and the "Fatal Alert" screen appears.
I hate the thought of getting a new PDA because I have absolutely enjoyed using the IIIxe.
Has anyone else had this problem? Could there be a problem with the Memory Manager? By the way, I noticed that the Memory Manager is no longer listed in the info section of my Palm?
If I have to purchase another PDA, I will...but not until I have tried everything for a possible solution to my problem...
Thanks in advance for any help regarding this matter:)

In my opinion at least two of your problems came from Palm and they should be willing to help you recover from them. I would email their tech support as a first step.
Second, if your Palm was more useable prior to the Dram Patch I would consider going back. Assuming you have a backup on your PC from the time prior to the installation of the patch. I am familiar with the Dram issue but not having experienced it had never gone into any detail on how the patch works. It would seem reasonable to assume that you could go back.
Again, I believe that Palm needs to be contacted to give you some leadership on resolving this problem.

Thanks so much for the advice. Palm swears that it couldn't be a problem with the DRAM fix. I agree with you that I am better off without it.
Yes, I do have a backup that I could try...it ceratinly wouldn't hurt.
Palm wouldn't talk to me when I called, unless I paid a $25 fee first.
What's that all about? So much for customer service.
I have read quite a few threads regarding the Palm III series that seem to have the fatal alert error as well.
This is a start...I appreciate your comments.

I have found that when the right Palm Tech is contacted and it is made clear to them that Palm has brought on the problem then the $25 is waived.
It is also important for those of us who are devoted to our Palm devices to understand that Palm is not in great financial shape. If they find it necessary to require compensation for tech support we need to accept that. None of the Palm licensees, HandEra and Hand Spring are doing well either. Sales have been slow and development and warranty costs high.
