Hello all. I have problem with "Buit-in Storage". I have installed some kind of software (MorphGear, exactly). Everything was OK until my Dell has hanged. After soft reset I've noticed that in Built-in Storage (where was part of MorphGear files) is one file that I can't remove (error 114). I can rename it and move it to any folder that is in Built-in Storage but I can't still delet it. Flash format software (Storage Tools, Flash Format Utility) don't recognize that part of memory as memory that I could erase or format. I must say that I performed already hard reset of device (including removing both bateries). After that I lost my all data from Dell except data in Built-in Storage. Someone on this forum said that, that part of memory is ROM memory. In that case, shouldn't it be erased whet I performed hard reset of Pocket PC? Anyone have that kind of problems? Meybe is some kind of other software that could help me to resolve my problem. Please help. PS Sorry about my english ;)

I don't think ROM gets erased on a hard reset. That's also where the OS is kept.

It's true, but all setings are stored in ROM too and after Hard Reset they wanished ;) Am I right?

I would think that settings would be stored in RAM in this situation.

The "Built-In Storage" is extra flash ROM beyond what is needed by the Axim's PPC OS and built-in files. You will find that with each ROM update from Dell that the amount of free space may shrink a bit.

The unit has RAM to store your data files and extra programs that you install that were not part of the built-in PPC application set (like Pocket Word, Pocket Excel, Pocket Outlook, MSN Messenger, etc.). If you look at Start->Settings->System Page->Memory you see that there is a slider so that you can adjust the RAM between storage and application use.

Anyway, with each hard reset, the RAM is flushed, but the ROM is not. So the "Built-In Storage" is *not* erased with a hard reset.

Note that the ROM area "Built-In Storage" is NOT part of the memory that you can adjust with the slider. It cannot be used by the Axim to run applications - it can only be used to store data and the actual application files themselves.

It is my understanding that FlashROM of this type has a definitive limit on the number of times that it can be written to. I believe that it is in the hundreds or thousands, but the limit is there. The more that you write to it, the slower the writing becomes as well. So you probably do not want to store dynaming data there, nor would I want to install an application there, unless it is one that is not used all that frequently.

If you cannot delete the file it may be that the file is still being used by that application. You may have no choice but to hard reset and then delete the file using the File Explorer tool.

I tried to do that. But I still can't remove this file.

It may be that the file is marked "read-only" then.

I cannot find a way for the File Explorer in PPC 2002 to change that attribute. So there are two things that I can think of that may help:

1. Connect the Axim and, from ActiveSync on your host computer, choose the toolbar icon to explore your files. While you also cannot change the attributes with this, you may be able to delete files that are marked "read-only" with a prompt.

2. Get a third-party file explorer that can change the attributes of the file. There is a freeware explorer from TauBetaPi called "Advanced Explorer" that is available from . From this you can tap and hold on a file and, from the pop-up "Properties", change the file from read-only.

That is about the only thing that I can think of that may be causing this.

I've already tried that but unfortunetly without any results. I don't have an more ideas how I could get rid of that file. And funny is that on Dell web page is no support for products like Axim. I tried to ask someone there but I've got no answer till now. If they could not help me then who will do? :)
