Does anyone know of a map program that works with the Zire 71?
I tried Rand McNally Deluxe Streetfinder 2000 and it comes up with fatal errors and I have to reset.

There's an updated (430k) pgm that RM will send you if you ask them. This is needed for Palm OS 5 devices

Just received an email from Rand Mcnally stating that streetfinder 2000 is not compatible with the Zire 71 and they recommend upgrading to the newest version.

I have three different versions at home, and they all have different problems. It's very hard (for me) to figure out what is the latest version, as some don't have a year in their name (StreetFinder 2000, StreeFinder/TripMaker Deluxe, and the one from Handmark).

I really liked it on my Palm III, as it has decent services listings and good directions (big enough to see arrow while driving). But have not had much success running on later devices (display problems, crashes, doesn't support VFS ...).

------

For now I use Delorme's Xmap Handheld. If you get Xmap HH, you MUST upgrade to the latest version (display bugs in earlier versions).

Issues: Searching listings is brain dead (sits for a minute or more doing "nothing").
PDA routing is a joke (on pre OS5 devices). It took over 15 minutes for it to route to home from work (about 12 miles - on-fwy off-fwy & a couple of turns). It also said "turn on road" instead of "turn on I-210".
Directions are squished between two buttons at the bottom of the screen (need passenger to read them to me, it could use a full screen mode with BIG font and BIG turn arrows).
Prompt (bell) for upcoming turn sometimes comes REAL late (like when I'm already exiting freeway). Would be nice if when using GPS it uses it's speed info to prompt earlier (or make it user adjustable).
When turns are close to one another there is no prompt!
Cannot print directions on paper (from PC app)
Now that we have more powerful processors (OS5), it would be nice to have voice directions like on the PPC.

It did surprise me a few times. I was going places I've already been and went off route on purpose. Example: It prompted me to turn the proper direction on the proper road even when this intersection was a mile off pre-planned route.

Note: I don't have an OS5 device yet, so don't know if XMap HH works with OS5.

The one you need for OS 5 is almost assuredly none of the above. You need 'StreetFinderV1_04_30_DX'

I wouldn't worry too much about it though. Drawing maps from a card is excruciatingly slow. Useless.

I find that XmapHH draws from card just fine (a few seconds - I do believe it caches the map to RAM).

Haven't used SF for some time, so cannot comment on it's drawing time (it doesn't NORMALLY support VFS maps, unless one uses msimport or autocard that fake SF in seeing the maps on the flash as if they're in RAM).
