Hi,
I'm trying to access my virgin net e-mail account using a 3c and a 14400 psion travel modem. The modem connects then the program seems to stall. Is anyone else using this setup? Could they tell me what connection script to use to get my mail?
Many Thanks.

I have a 3c, 14.4k Travel Modem, a copy of eMail-It and a Virgin account (although this may now have expired through lack of use!).
I will have a play about with it and see what happens :)

My Virgin account is still active as I connected from the PC. However, I have to concede defeat as far as connecting with eMail-It is concerned.
Using my 3c, 14.4k Travel Modem and eMail-It, I was able to connect without problems to my Claranet 24/7 account and to a Freeserve p-a-y-g account, but it just wouldn't negotiate the internet protocols with Virgin.
I would suggest that you set up a Freeserve account if you don't already have one. You will still be able to retrieve your Virgin mail and use your Virgin email address in outgoing mail. The only difference is that you actually connect to the internet with Freeserve and send mail with Freeserve's SMTP server.
Ask again if you need detailed settings to do this.

Thanks Mike. If you could give me the details for freeserve that would be great.

Firstly you need to set up a Freeserve account from their website at www.freeserve.com Go through the signup pages until you have your Username, Password and email address - then disconnect. At the end of the signup is a button to click to install Freeserve in your PC - this should be avoided like the plague! - there is no need to install their software which will add Freeserve branding to Internet Explorer and Outlook Express.
eMail-It in the 3c
In the Mail Setup, the first screen is "Preferences". The first line can be left at "Only one" if you are only going to be retrieving Virgin mail, otherwise set it to "All defined". Set the SMTP server defined line to "Mail setup". The next screen is for the POP3 server configuration. Again leave it with your Virgin details unless you want to use a Freeserve address as well. Freeserve's POP3 server is pop.freeserve.net and your mailbox login is in the form username.freeserve.co.uk.
In the "Send mail settings":
SMTP Server - smtp.freeserve.net
Email address - your Virgin email address
Your name -
Reply To address - (blank, defaults to email address above)
Use signature - (optional)
Time zone - GMT?
Attachments - Base64 (this is the standard MIME encoding)
TCP/IP Settings
In the first screen, select "ISP settings" and in the next screen "New"
ISP name - Freeserv (max 8 characters)
Phone number - 08450796699
D N S - 194.152.64.35
User name - username.freeserve.co.uk
Password - (as created during signup)
Login script - ATZL0E0 OK ph$ : id$ : pw$
Timeout (secs) - 30
Add SMTP details - No
.....and that should be it :)

Thanks Mike,
I can now log on to freeserve but when I try to send or recieve mail I get the message "cannot log on to pop server(or smtp) destination unreachable." Any ideas?

Any ideas? Not a lot, to be honest, as it isn't a program I actually use. One thing with Freeserve though is that to 'send' mail your phone line must send CLID (Calling Line ID) - in other words, if someone dials 1471 they get your number. If you normally have this disabled, you should prefix Freeserve's number with 1470 so it becomes 147008450796699 and CLID will be sent for that call.
If you want to send me the files in your M:\Emailit\ directory, I can have a look to see if there is anything obviously wrong. Just put the files in a ZIP archive and email it to me. To do this, go to my website and click on the button to email me, as I cannot be email'd directly from the forums. I don't actually need the In.mbx, In.toc, Out.mbx and Out.toc files as these relate to your messages and not to the connectivity issue.

Mike
Thanks very much for your help.
I finally managed to send and recieve e-mail this evening.
I'm afraid it was a classic case of not reading the f***ing instructions!
Thanks again for your help,
Harry
