I have had the z71 for a little over a week now. I am starting to get a loud creak/squeak sound in the slider as if it is loose when I'm gripping it in my hand. It is starting to get rather annoying:( Also, there are very obvious scratches developing in the bottom front of the silver slider around the shutter button, due apparently from opening and closing for camera access.

Is this happening to anyone else????

Mine is 2 weeks old today. A few days ago I noticed some creaking between the two halves - they just don't seem to be as tightly fitted now as they did when they were out of the box. When holding it in my hand and entering data on it, there are times I can feel the cases flex together. No scratches where you describe them.

It still makes a nice positive click when I open it for the camera -- but the same sort of positive click/seating doesn't feel like it's there anymore when I close it up.

Noticed at various stores, the demo models also seem to be variable as to whether they show this or not. For some, the cases seem to be looser, while on others, they seem to have better fit and finish. Mine started out tight with no significant gaps. Now, looking at the bottom edge, the right side gap is a bit larger than the left side gap.

Minor annoyance now -- hope it's normal aging of the device. Think a case would knock down some of the creaking <g>.

Im also getting those creaks in my camera slider, specially when i slide back the camera to its hidden position. the sound or creak/crack is located above the camera shutter button, and as i said before, it does like a double creak when i slide down the camera.

it doesnt annoy me, but does it mean that its starting fail? if so, what should i do, is it something to worry about?

i havent seen any reviews regarding the slider reliability (i've seen reviews about tungstens T's sliders, and they should last about 6 years without any problems at all). does anybody know about this reliability?

anyone has this problem?

for further information:

-normal usage (medical apps mostly)
-i dont use a lot the camera, nor i push it hard or anything at all
-when used is like, 3 to 4 times a week. (camera)
-bought in july 2003

thanksss

I've had mine since about the time the Zire 71 was originally released, and it's still as solid as when I bought it, and I take mine everywhere I go. *shrug*

mine does the double click thing too doesn't bother me and seems to work fine.
and about the scratching thing that was disscused here a couple of months ago and we came to the conclusion that the palm was designed like that so you could tell if the camerea had ever been opened.

Sooner or later, even the most beautiful woman will have wrinkles. In this world there is imperfection and ageing. Accept it and thou shalt be content.

I've dropped mine three times (through friends mucking about :-@), and I've had it three months and I have no problems whatsoever. Maybe you guys got a dodgy batch or something?

I only got mine about a week ago, and the creak has just started to be noticable. Right now it's not bad, only a little bit on the left in front of the clip hole thing. I'm hoping that it doesn't get any worse. Also, I too have the scratch by the shutter button - it's in the little dip to the right of it. I didn't abuse it at all, so like dirtydog said, it's probably just normal.

thanks for replying

1) as i said, it doesnt annoy me, but yes, im worried this thing will die before i enjoyed it at its full capacity, because, being honest, i dont think of buying a new palm in the near future, with that dollar climbing and stuff, :(, what can i expect? (with the silver slider)

by the way, i havent seen that famous scratch near the shooter, i think i just got lucky with that, :)

2) what do u use for cleaning the case (silver slide, blue cast, etc) i have this disc washer (some sort of alcohol based), but im not sure 'bout using it, suggestions?

thankss

one last question: has anybody tried the nesem emulator but with bigger/better nes roms (i.e. super mario bros 3)?? i only have the preview version, seems nice, but i would like to see more, :)

the battery on the Zire 71 is supposed to last two years the palm I guess should last that long. and as far as cleaning it i use some pda cleaning solution I bought from radio shack, but windex on a paper tow should work fine, just don't spray it directly on the palm pilot.
