When I put my 71 in the factory case the joystick turns it on and runs down the battery, is there a way to turn the joystick off completely?

I don't know how to turn off the joystick, but I read on another forum a post on the subject where the person reversed the Zire in the case, putting the top in first. This stopped the joystick from hitting. Might be worth a try in the short run.

Cheers,

Scott

There is a program called' offalready' which may help you, however it is not going to turn off your joystick, but prevent your palm from accidentally turning on.

Just curious about the joystick and the mp3 player. I can imagine a lot of people getting the Zire 71 started to listen to mp3 and then put it in the case to protect it while you walk or sit or whatever. Doing this, you can't put it in the case upside down because of the headphone cord. I also know that the palm turns it screen off after awhile in mp3 mode. Does hitting the joystick turn on the backlight again? Does it stop the song? This could be really annoying. Maybe some type of oversized camera case could help?

Hi,

I've looked into this and read about two things:

1) Somewhere burried in the Zire 71 manual, it explicitly describes this situation. What happens when your palm is off...and the joystick gets pressed it does go on. However by the 2nd or 3rd time it automatically disables...keeping it from running down the battery. Once you turn the Zire 71 back on, it is reenabled.

2) As others have mentioned, put the Zire 71 in the case upside down...I do and it seems to help...about 90% of the time.

Good luck!

I always place mine upside down in the case. This does help somewhat. It is also true as someone stated earlier that it will only happen two or three time before the Zire 71 realizes it is an accident and disengages the joystick. Probably a good thing to have your auto-off feature set pretty low though. This was if it is initially activated in the case it will go off in two minutes. Then if it happens one or two more time the auto disengage will kick in.

When I put mine in the case, I push it down in then I look through to see if it is on and if it is, just push the power button and Voila!

Two points here:
1. PowerOn53 is the program to use. It does not turn off the palm completely, but if it accidentally switches ON, it will switch it off automatically.
There is another program called SwitchHack which will work if you use TealMaster (lastest version)

2. Now I know why my Z71 turns off when I am using TealDoc and reading with the JoyStick

I wish I had the jogwheel of my old Sony Clie.

how durable is the joystick?

i had the same problem with the case and the joystick being pressed for long periods for a few days and then start putting my zire 71 upside down.

i hope i didnt harm that thing.

All,

First of all placing the Zire 71 in the case upside down will not hurt it a bit.

Palm is well aware of the joystick getting activated accidently when it's in its case. That's why they built a safeguard into it. When it's accidently activated it will go off automatically in a bit and stay OFF...until you press the power button back on.

Therefore whichever way you place the Zire 71 in the case, the joystick is accounted for.

I read this on the Palm site...can't remember where.

Good luck! :)
