Is anyone else missing the thesaurus function in spell? IIRC, the release before 158 had a functioning thesaurus, but this one does not seem to. Am I missing something here?

Marty, my thesaurus is working just fine. If not, Psion would truly have heard the explosion well before now!

How puzzling. Everything else working OK in your installation?

Nope, ain't there. Maybe this is just a U.S. issue, since the earlier OS didn't have a U.S. localized version, only U.K.

The tools menu has: Spell Check, Anagram, Crossword and About Spell. That's it. No 'Thes' button on the toolbar.

Maybe I should install the UK version and use that instead!

You know, I have never really looked for the Thes. As a matter of fact, all that I have is Spell on all my Psions, unless I am not looking in the right place. I have no crosswords, anagrams and all that on the tools menu. I know that we should have them, but my Series 7, Netbook and 5mx doesn't show them. I will get the book out and probably find it, but I am sending this anyway just in case you know something that I don't. I really don't have a real big use for it, but its nice to have all the stuff. I had the UK version of the 158 OS that came out several months ago, of course now the new one has some changes. Just so that you are aware, it was fine for me having lived in England for nine years. But, when you push the @ key you will get the " and when you push the " you will get the @, not a big deal at all, just so that you know about it. The spell checker will be using UK English spelling---naturally. Not sure of any other differences---could be some. It it is different and has the Thes and the other stuff it might be work doing again with the UK version. I know when you go to the download page it says for the UK and US version "full version" or something like that to indicate its the fullup version with everything.

Thanks,

Bobbyr

hmmm,

summat must be up, because on my 158 install on a UK english nB, the Spell app has the following toolbar buttons:

Spell
Anag
Xword
Thes
Clear
Dict

(I also did note that on starting the app, the Thes button took a second or so to appear after the rest of the app. This probably don't mean a thing tho')

I'm thinking this might therefore be a bug in the US version, since they obviously do have the thesaurus data from previous versions - you might want to contact Psion about this one..

Bob

The thesaurus should be within the Spell app - fire up Spell and you should see the buttons listed as in diem's post above. Similar on your 5mx. It's logical, as you key in a word and then choose the function you want to perform on it. For example, you can check the spelling, and then use the thesaurus to find alternatives words.

Highly useful - I wouldn't like to be without it. Let's hope we can get to the bottom of this.

Interesting... My toolbar has:

Spell
Anag
Xword
Add Word
Clear
Dict

Note that 'add word' has replaced 'thes.' Odd, no? Any other US users out there?

Bobbyr, will you check out your toolbar buttons under Spell and let us know what you have please?

Thanks

Marty,

I've got the Thes button (actually the same button list that diem posted) and I'm running a US release that I downloaded last week (Version 1.05(453)-English(USA)-ASCII (Release 158) on the About screen). It's also under the Tools menu with a shortcut of Ctrl+R. Do you have this?

I had the UK version installed before the US version, but I wouldn't think that could be effecting this. I don't see anything related to Spell on my CF, and everything on C: would have been wiped in the hard reset. And I've checked that the spell checker is indeed using US spellings vs. UK (color vs colour).

Does anyone know where the dictionary files are stored? Is it possible that a file is missing/corrupt and therefore Spell is disabling the Thesaurus command?

perhaps...

The user dictionary is in c:\system\data\user.dic. Marty maybe you could try renaming this temporarily and see if that fixes things?

Hi Julie,
I currently have a word file up on my Netbook. I have selected tools, spell check and the tool bar on the right side has from top to bottom: Spell, Find, Import Graph, Import Sketch and Print. That is all that is there. Its the same on my Series 7 and 5mx. Maybe this is one of those "operator malfunctions" :o)

Thanks,

Bobbyr

Bob, rather than working in Word, launch the "Spell" app from the Extras bar. You should then have a toolbar on the right with all the different features within Spell. :)

Many thanks for everyone's help.

I recall using the prerelease (but not alpha) OS that had only UK support. It had the UK dictionary and I ran SpellX to switch it to the US dictionary.

When I installed 158, I think it didn't like what SpellX had done previously. I reran SpellX and WHAMMO! I now have a functioning thesaurus.

Thanx again!

Julie and Marty, this is one of those things that makes you feel kind of stupid---you know how you think that you have seen it before and forgot where it was. That is why I said exactly what I was doing so that if it was wrong you could point it out.

Thanks Julie, looks like you straightened Marty and me out. You know how we are over here. :o) I was going to say we "yanks" but not sure if Marty is one or an English person living in Colorado.

Again, thanks for the help.

Thanks,

Bobbyr

Well, there's certainly no need to feel stupid - we all get on the wrong track from time to time - tell me about it!

That's the great thing about this forum - with everyone's input we usually get there in the end! :)

Yes we do and thanks again. I have a question on the PC Card compatibility list, about networking. I am not sure I understand about what they are networking to what---you are doing some of that also, I think.

Thanks again Julie,

Bobbyr
