My old Palm Vx stopped functioning, and I just bought the Zire 71 as a replacement. Before the Palm Vx died, I did get a backup fo all the data ,i.e., address book, calendar, memos, to do list, etc. and need to know how to get them into Outlook XP, or on my new Zire71 so I can then do a synch with Outlook XP. The file extension of these backups are .dat and .bak When I set up my Zire71, I changed my user name as instructed at the Palm support web site, and then did a hot synch. However, it did not pick up any of my old data. Can anyone walk me through this? Thanks.

Your first mistake was to listing to Palm support and changing your Hotsync ID. All you had to do was to rename your Backup directory to something else, uninstall your old palmdesktop, install the z71 desktop and hotsync and you would have been fine. Nevertheless, here's what I would do:
1. Using whatever conduit manager app you are using (probably Pocket Mirror), point your core PIM apps' conduits to Palm Desktop instead of Outlook.
2. Make a copy of your current/interim datebook, address book, memo and to do folders and put there somewhere on your hard drive (just in case).
3. Copy the contents of each of the 4 core PIM app folders from your old hotsync ID to the corresponding folders under your new hotsync ID.
4. You should now have you data in Palm Desktop.
5. Hotsync to get the info into your Palm
6. Change PocketMirror to sync to outlook again.
7. Hotsync to get your data from your Palm into Outlook.
8. Now you are cooking with gas.
Hope this helps
