Hi all. I'm new to the board and I was hoping someone could help me. I just bought a Sandisk 256mb for my ipaq 3955. I plugged it in, turned on the ipaq and went strait to the "Memory" Icon. It is telling me that the Total Storage Card Memory is only 238.50 mb. This is a 256mb card!! Has anyone else noticed that there is 17.50 mb missing from the card? I know formatting, etc takes away some of it, but this is rediculous??

Thanks!!

welcome to the dual standards of reporting size..

when ScanDisk is reproting memory they say 256 MB or 256,000,000 (256 Million) bytes. ScanDsik is reporting the saize as 1 MB = 1000 Bytes.

However the computer (rightly) reports the size as 256 Million / 1024 or because a MB actually has 1024 bytes in it because 2^10 = 1024. So you ahve the right card and scan disk did not ripp you off, any more then Maxtor, WD, or Seagate do when you buy a HD.

Also, if this is a secure digital card, the file system requires some reserved space to store security information.

.........I've bought a 512MB SD card. Settings/Memory reports 488.25MB . I read the above and thought.........'OK'

However, Pocket Explorer, a file explorer add-on reports the full 512MB

Now what ?

..........using a formatting utility on the iPaq and reformatting to 512 clusters and FAT32 drops to 508MB in Pocket explorer and 425MB in settings/memory...........

Strange, man !! LOL
