I'm very confused about going wireless. I'm not even sure what it can do . . . can it surf the web? Also what hardware/software would I need. What about monthly fees? Can I use my aol account?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Well, to begin to give you some leads on where to look, and what you can do, let's try the following:

1. Yes, with either a modem or a cable to many cellular phones (assuming that your provider offers a data-enabled service), you can surf the web. You will nead a dial up ISP. Your same account for accessing the web via the PC (if you have one) will work. I believe one place to look for a cell cable is The Supply Net

2. You can retrieve email.

3. I believe that you can use AOL IM services, but I don't know this for a certainty.

4. I have heard that charges can get out of hand, with cell providers charging by the amount of data downloaded.

You can also get a Minstrel wireless modem that clips to your m500/505/515 and then you are connected to the net. The modem is a bit expensive (350) and I couldn't find what the monthly connection cost are but it is an always on connection that you can web, e-mail

Hi Gofur,
I use the Minstrel (Novatel) Modem via EarthLink. It attaches to the Palm 515. It is an excellent fit and the service area here in Florida is very extensive. You will need to visit the web site for details regarding service in your area. They offer the Modem as a Free benefit when you sign up for a years service. The rate is just under $40 a month. It will allow you to easily check all of your mail account including the new Omnisky mail box that comes with the package. You can browse the web and I do believe that AOL is not a problem.

MultiMail Pro came with my m125 and I downloaded the Eudora Internet Suite for the browser. I use my Motorola p280 as a modem via IR and dial up Earthlink just like I would on my PC. It doesn't cost anything besides a normal phone call, and I can send/receive e-mail and browse the Web. The only drag is that EudoraWeb doesn't handle graphics or cookies--I know Blazer does graphics but not sure about cookies.

I also did the same thing with my Visor Deluxe and Nokia 8290.

Right now, I have no home phone service--SBC Ameritech (barf) is dragging (5 WEEKS and counting!) about getting service started because I'll be an AT&T customer again--so at home, the Palm/cellphone is my only way to go online. Some day we'll get some sort of broadband connection and I can tell the "hardwired" phone companies to get lost...

Uh, yeah, I really needed to join another BBS:D
Anyhoo, does anyone know of anyplace besides thesupplynet.com to get a cable to connect a m505 to a Motorola v.60? Fifty bucks is a bit pricey for two connectors and a foot of cable in my book. I've haunted BestBuy and tried to cobble something together to no avail. The phone and palm are both the wife's - she drives for a living and on-the-road access to Mapquest et.al. would be a godsend. Anybody?

These cables are very much handmade; a one at a time item. All that I have seen are priced to represent the time involved.
We are at a point in the history of the Palm and Wireless that will appear very primitive when we look back from mid 2003.
As to the posting suggesting that the Minstrel Modem will not work with a 515; the minstrel works with all members of the m500 series. My 515 has been attached to a functioning Minstrel with EarthLink Service for almost a year.

HairBall,
I just wanted to say that I use Mapopolis on my 515 and do not use the modem to access Mapquest. There are two reasons: 1). The nature of wireless is perverse; if you need Mapquest you are not in coverage. 2). Mapopolis can give you very accurate driving instructions for any area of the US.

Think about how much time it is taking you to find a replacement or how long to make when you figure out how. Ive seen similar cables for considerably more. I ran through those estimates and bought one pretty quick for my IPAQ. Came right away, with good tips on how to use. No complaints, I have used it a huge amount and am very happy with the cable.
