Is there a definitive set of files to be wary of when upgrading xBooks? This has partly come from the discussion in the WiFi topic, and also from my own personal experience of moving from a 7 to a 7Book, but I wonder if anyone has truely documented all files that people should think about, and as a result we can point people to when they are uprgading / having problems.

I know about the Commsdb.dat, and the issue that this must be created fresh by the netbook OS to add the Ethernet support, and this is documented on diem's website http://www.isbg00598.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/faqNetbook.htm (although this doesn't mention the ability to delete the file and recreate without performing a full restore).

If upgrading from a 7 to a 7Book, there's also the Shell.ini which shouldn't be copied across (otherwise the Web application icon does not work, as it's pointed to Web, which isn't installed)

Plus, it's best to be aware of the location of the Contacts file, which unless a fairly full restore is performed might be missed.

Also, any power users of a Series 7 can delete Java either before the upgrade or after, as all the Java support is within the netbook OS image.

Any others people should worry about?

Personally, when going from a 7 to a 7Book, it seemed to break the email sync support, and from then on although it copied all the emails over (and showed them on the screen), they all had a '?' next to them and were inaccessible. Even deleted the whole mail folder didn't resolve. This isn't a big problem to me as I now use the WiFi connection, and connect directly to my local mail server, and have also moved over to xjmail.

I suspect this could have been fixed by deleting all the PsiWin support files and recreating, but I couldn't resolve it at that time.

AFAIK there's no definitive list - if this thread develops into the creation of just such a list, I'll upgrade my FAQ appropriately.

From MikeyC in another topic:

GPRS for internet access works fine on build 158 out of the box, but to get WAP working over GPRS, the Mobile GPRS Update (ver. 2.00) needs to be installed (see MikeMcC's website). This installs a number of files in the c:\system\libs directory. One of these is TCPIP.PRT. It is this file which stops the machine displaying the option to connect via ethernet. If TCPIP.PRT is deleted, the option to connect via ethernet reappears, but you can no longer connect to WAP via GPRS.

The workaround is thus: rename TCPIP.PRT to TCPIP.old when you want to connect via ethernet. When you want to connect to WAP via GPRS rename it back to TCPIP.PRT (I think it is case sensitive). The file ONLY needs to be renamed for WAP over GPRS. Connecting by Opera to the internet via GPRS does not require it to be renamed. Moving the file does not seem to work as the Psion still seems to be aware of its presence.

You may need to reinstall from scratch to get this working. What I did was start with a clean machine, install the WAP browser and the Mobile GPRS update. From there, I configured the machine to access WAP over GPRS and made sure that nFTP was working over ethernet by the file renaming method above. I then reinstalled my backup files over the top from CF. Everything seems to work fine now. Oh, you also need to delete IRDA.PRT from c:\system\libs after installing the Mobile GPRS Update, but this has been well documented elsewhere.

I understand that this is not going to affect a huge number of people, but it was driving me crazy. A bit of a pain to rename the file each time, so if someone would like to write a macro......

Although this one isn't as obvious, and more difficult (it's not simply a file that should not be restored), but I think worth adding to the list of issues once you add Ethernet support to a 7Book.
