I'm reading in some people's message board post that they have CF in the IBM workpad z50's up to 256 meg but i'm checking the IBM product website and it says that is up to 48 megs. It that a mistake on the website? Or can you really just pop in a CF card as high capacity as you want into the z50?

I've been using a 512 meg card for a little under a year now although i've swapped it out on occasion to use in my camera.
I've never had any problems. I did a very long time ago fool about with some drivers from IBM to do with their Microdrive which I also believe erased the regular compact flash drivers. BUt I doubt they're still on my machine.
its given me no trouble except the odd time when the machine decides not to see it and i have to reset the z50.
cheers

You are confusing RAM memory with Storage card memory.
The Z50 comes with a standard 16MEG of RAM memory with an optional 32MEG RAM upgrade card that is user installable.
This allows for a maximum of 48MEG of RAM. Due to Windows CE limitiations, only 16MEG of the 48MEG of RAM is allowed for storage.
With Storage cards however (most commonly CF) or mechanical microdrives, there is to my knowledge NO limit to how much the Z50 can access.

Ohhh, i see, so compact flash or microdrives has no limit, but the RAM on the z50 is max of 48megs... understood.. just one question.. if i was to add that extra 32megs to make it 48megs, what kinda memory do i use? CF again?

i'm reading on the product site as well as recalling from my memory of my friend z50, there are 2 slots on the z50. One is the PCMCIA which is for microdrives, flash storage or compact flash correct?
the 2nd slot is for the memory upgrade i'm assuming? and if so, what kinda media do i use to upgrade the memory?
correct me if i'm wrong.

Your still a little off on the configuration.
The ram upgrade is installed INSIDE the Z50. If you turn the system upside down, you will see the large ram expansion card port door. This door is removed with a screwdriver to reveal the ram expansion edge connector.
The 32Meg RAM card is exclusively designed for the Z50. There are many many offers for the ram card on EBAY. That's your best bet.
The PCMCIA and CF slots are as described. Normally, the CF slot is used for CF memory cards, and the PCMCIA is used for ethernet, modems, or even CF cards with a PCMCIA adaptor.
You may want to review your owner's manual.

Well, i just bought my z50 off ebay and should be coming in soon, but that completely cleared up EVERYTHING.. i saw a picture of the back panel that you were talking about.. thanks a lot for your help!!!
do you know how much the 32meg for RAM goes for? right now i'm also looking for a docking station but both RAM and docking station don't seem to be posted on ebay.
