Running Outlook XP and 5MX. I have some 500 contacts on my 5MX. When sync with Outlook only 52 show up.
I have checked views/sort but no luck.
What's going wrong?

Hans,

Hmmm...another one! We've got another user with a Revo with similar problems.

Are you syncing with Outlook in a corporate environment or with Outlook as a standalone on your PC and not connected to a corporate network? Did you install the contacts upgrade from Psion? When you get the security warning about something accessing your address book, do you give the time the maximum of 5 minutes to do this first transfer?

Are you able to sync changes in both directions with the contacts that did make it to Outlook? If so, the best answer may be to export your contacts from the 5mx using C2F (available in the software section here) and import the contacts into Outlook.

Well, where do I start?
I only use it on my home PC with XP prof.
I do get the "...is trying to access.." and I give it 10 mins. Mind you I did not get this before using XP.
Regarding synching it both ways, I am not sure what that's about.
I am using the disc that came with the Psion.
I have an Ericsson too. I am using that at the moment and are keeping my Psion 5Mx as a spare. Might that have anything to do with this?

I am really stuck on this!

Hans,

It sounds like you've never updated to PsiWin 2.3.3. You can confirm this by going PsiWin, Help, about Psiwin. If it doesn't say PsiWin 2.3.3, Build 149 then you don't have the version that works with WinXP.

You'll have to go through a four step process:

1. Download PisWin 2.3.3. There's a link to it in the software section here. The link works for me but other people have reported trouble connecting. If you do, a search here for PsiWin 2.3.3 will come up wih other links. It's a 25mb download, so if you don't have a cable modem or DSL, it's going to take a while.

2. Uninstall the current version of PsiWin through the Windows Control Panel.

3. Run the registry cleaner that's available at Mikes site : http://home.clara.net/m-mcconnell/ and then look in the 5mx section.

4. Install PsiWin 2.3.3.

Also, make sure you have installed the contacts update available at www.psion.com .

Now set up a new sync task and give it a go. Things should work correctly now - if, not write back with an exact description of what's not working and any error messages you're getting.

I'm most grateful for your guidance. I went through steps 1/4 but I could not find the last contacts update.

It still does not work. With Outlook not running it states "..cold not open outlook.." then I open it and it does the synch. Still no more than 52 contacts though out of my 555. I'm still stuck.

Just had another play and set up a new synch task as you suggested. It works and now I have 470 out of my 555 contacts in Psion. No idea why though.
In Outlook I'm using word as my editor. When I write a new message there are no contacts to be seen at all. Is that because I use Word; I thought contacts would be automatically available to the Outlook editor.
So so far most my contacts are there but why has the rest not gone over and why are there no contacts available for the editor?
Any suggestions?

Hans,

You can download the syncronization upgrade at http://www.psion.com/mypsion/Login.asp . If you haven't already set up an account there, go ahead and register - it's free an you'll need the site for other upgrades.

You'll find the syncronization upgrade by searching using the 5mx as the Psion model and EPOC as the operating system. Download and install this upgrade. Reboot and try syncing again and see if all your contacts come across this time. It seems that people who start off without PsiWin 2.3.3 and the contacts upgrade always seem to have the most problem getting the initial contacts sync to work right. If worst comes to worst, you can always export the contacts from the 5mx and then import them into Outlook. Wverything should work correctly after that.

As to using WordMail, are you using OutlookXP as well as Word XP? That's the first thing that's required. It's also likely that contacts synced from the 5mx are not considered "resolved" by Outlook. You can download a free utility at http://www.chapura.com/free_downloads.php#Resolve that will go through your Outlook file and resolve all the contact names. Once that's done, you should see the contacts list in WordMail again.

You may also want to consider changing your default e-mail editor from Word to Outlook. Using WordMail makes every message about 20% larger and causes some stability problems. There's very little advantage to using Word over using Rich Text in Outlook. In addition, unless there's some pressing need to use rich text, many of your contacts who are using modems may be quite annoyed at how long it takes to download your messages. Plain text messages are only about 25% of the size of WordMail or Rich Text formatted e-mails.

Many thanks once more for your excellent advice. I did all you suggested and have addreses once more. I cannot quite work out what happened though.
I remain with Word as the setting I use is "plain text" so I presume that's what goes out.

Dare I ask something non-psion related? Please ignore if this is out of bounds.
I have been struggling for a long time with a problem. No newsgroup sofar has given any useful advice.
Since using XP pro with 5 user accounts all set to admin, mine is the only one that can be used to access hotmail and indeed google. The strange thing is in the other accounts- the rest of the family-google does not do anything; it just sits there. To me it seems like a firewall problem but even with Norton and Zonealarm off nothing. I set up new accounts and again no luck.
This is driving me potty. I am just about to wipe the whole system and start again. Any suggestions, sites to go, are more than welcome.

Hans,

I'm glad you got the contacts problem sorted out. Outlook has a bug that doesn't treat imported address as as real until it's resolved. This has been a continuing problem for Outlook users.

As to your user problems, do you also have the XP filewall turned on? There's a bug that only the first person who'e set up as adminstrator can get through the filewral to some sites, including Google. The first thing to try is to turn off the XP firewall In Network Connection, right click, properties and advanced. You can turn off the XP firewall here. There's also an SP4 update that just came out today. I haven't had a chance to read it yet so you check at Microsoft and see if this upgrade addresses the problem.

Wow, that's great. I am most grateful for your advice. That's more than any newsgroup I have posted to. I'll have a look.

X firewall has been turned off all the time, but perhaps not before creating the other users.
I cannot find the SP4 on the MS site. The only ones released 26/6 are for 2000, not XP.

Any idea where to look?

Hans,

Sorry, I was working on a server install yesterday and Win2k and WinXP were getting crossed on my head. The release yesterday was for Win2K, not WinXp so ignore that.

If you're XP firewall has always been turned off, try turning it on but don't allow the other firewall software to load. Delete and then recreate the users. Test that they can reach places like Google. If this works OK, you try activating your other firewall software one at a time, testing each user when you've done so. I've seen cases where having several types of firewall software running can confuse WinXP and cause new users to have limited privileges even when install as admins.

Jim,
I'll have a go after finishing Gran's patio.
Do you mean that I should turn off Zonealarm or just the XP firewall? What about Norton virus?

Hans,

Turn off everthing BUT the WinXP firewall, including Norton Antivirus. Delete the current users and set them up again with a new account. The goal here is to determine if this is a firewall issue or something in permissions that's causing the problem.
