OK

This could be a dumb question, but those that have seen my previous posts know that I am contemplating performing a hard reset of my Palm TT and then a reinstall to try to redeem so MUCH needed resident memory. My question is, if I do the hard reset and then sync the device to my computer, will it move everything over to the TT again (including the 'orphaned' files I am trying to get rid of)?

Thanks for the help

Well, probably not all the orphaned preferences files, but I would bet you would be keeping some stuff you donīt need. The way to prevent this is to:

1) Go to your palm folder ("C:\Palm" or so), look for a folder named after your Hotsync name.

2) Move the "Backup" folder you will find inside it to somewhere safe. That folder contains all the files that get sent back to your PDA on Hotsync in case they do not exist anymore.

3) Hard-reset the PDA.

4) Perform a Hotsync. You will be keeping your data (address book, etc) but no apps.

5) Go to that safe place where you placed your backup folder and select the files you DO want to reinstall.

That should give you a nice, clean TT... ;)

I agree with Condor, only I have done the following: Instead of using backup, I've picked the programs I wanted and let them individually reinstall (from add-in or whatever directory initial file was copied to, not backup)... it takes more effort, but it has yielded slightly cleaner results (and going through all that effort makes me more selective on subsequent decisions to trial stuff)!
Good luck!

Thanks for the info guys....I'm making a date to hard reset this weekend! Wish me luck! Don't know why I'm so freaked about it, but it does cause a certain level of anxiety....Wish there was a way to memory upgrade the TT without otherwise seemingly inefficient software work-arounds to make the TT think the SD card's memory is some kind of resident mem extension....

Of course, if epocrates would make a stinkin' proggy with a db that would run off the SD, than it wouldn't be an issue! ;)

Performing a hard reset is not so bad. I run a hard reset every couple of months when I can't seem to clear up all the garbage that's installed along with programs. Even deleting programs often leaves behind all sorts of junk (fonts, save files etc...).

Mostly when Palm releases a major patch that includes all the previous "hot fixes" I tend to hard reset and then install the all inclusive patch. Seems to help stability...

Hehe I had two hard resets in the last week! If you are worried, why not do a full backup using BackupBuddy VFS Free, onto your SD, then if anything did go wrong, it's all there to restore just in case......
