Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Activesnyc 3.5 as Guest
Everytime I sync my iPAQ, it defaults to Guest without giving me an option. I've uninstalled and reinstalled activesync 3.5 several times, it sets up a new partnership and then when I take the iPAQ out of the cradel and set it back in, it sync as Guest and not the partnership. Up tell now it had been working great. Any suggestions, or has anyone else had this problem?
Thanks,

Next time you try uninstalling ActiveSync, try manually deleting the ActiveSync folder. The add/remove programs wizard does not delete the program folders.
You should also try upgrading ActiveSync to version 3.6. I don't recall the exact link for it. However, I saw another message thread about ActiveSync 3.6 which should point you in the right direction. Good luck!

Here's a link to the ActiveSync 3.6 post.

Also, here's a great link posted today concerning ActiveSync troubleshooting.
http://www.cewindows.net/
It includes:
9/23/02 - Split the Windows CE Versions FAQ into the ActiveSync Versions FAQ. Added an ActiveSync Troubleshooting Guide. Revised Removing ActiveSync 3.X to include ActiveSync 3.0, 3.1 or 3.5.

:(
I am having the same problem. I uninstalled ActiveSync 3.5, deleted the folders, and then installed 3.6. Still no luck. I checked out the troubleshooting guide at http://www.cewindows.net but I didn't see anything that addressed this issue.
I am running Windows 95 on my PC, though.

I don't knkow if Win 95 has any bearing on your problem but I was having the same grief you were with the guest thing. Somebody on this board suggested upgrading to activesync 2.6. I did that and was still getting the "guest" message.
I checked the Compaq knowledge base (possibly an oxymoron) and it referenced a problem w/activesync 3.1 and guest. Their solution? A soft reset.
I tried it and since then I've had no problems with being a guest. Try the soft reset. Make sure you take your ipaq from the cradle before turning off computer. Turn on computer and fully boot before putting ipaq in cradle.
Good luck.

I've tried the soft reset and still no luck. Does anyone know of any other sources of troubleshooting knowledge out there?
Thanks.

Yesterday I experienced this guest issue on my home desktop, and am very frustrated with it (works on laptop still). Several observations with my experience are listed below. I am very eager to see if anyone can come up with the solution!! The problem started when trying to upgrade avantgo, and it failed, then de-installed it. I think there is some file / configuration not right on the home machine, but am not technical enough to figure out!
-> have been synching with 2 computers for 1+ years
-> upgraded to 3850 (from 3600) Feb 2002
-> connect via IR on work laptop (Win2000), USB on home (Win98). HOME desktop synch no longer works (guest), but work still fine. Logically, there is no issue with the PDA
-> upgraded home with activesynch 3.6 in November
-> using 3.5 on work laptop (Windows 2000)
-> tried upgrading AvantGo in early December, it did not seem to take. Tried to 'tick it again to install', and got an error on the iPAQ, it said to de-install and try again. Once de-installed AvantGo, **seemed to trigger this GUEST connection issue**
-> tried removing (add/remove pgms) activesynch, reinstall 3.5, or 3.6 upgrade with no success after initial synch (many combinations)
-> tried soft reset, with rename device - no luck
-> tried the command in the CENET posting, no luck (command failed)
-> DO NOT THINK A HARD RESET WILL WORK AS THE SYNC STILL IS FINE WITH THE WORK LAPTOP. this is an issue with the local computer.
-> searched microsoft sites for help - nothing! Considered submitting support issue (at 90 USD per 'incident').
HELP!!!

It is amazing how many there are out there having Guest issues. In my situation the iPAQ synchs fine with the laptop, but with the desktop it suddenly (after just about a year) synchs as a guest. I can reinstall activesynch, and it recognises the partnership right away the first time, then goes into the ABYSS the next... There has to be something about the desktop?!
Does anyone know of where else I can go to try to resolve this? Or any additional wizards with suggestions?
Thanks a BU

guys, microsoft has a specific knowledgebase article just on the issue of the "guest" thing. go to microsoft site and do a search. it was very thourough and fixed my problem and it will fix all yours- it is something very specific in the "device" name on your handheld that it will guide you through to fix.

Scottyb,
Are you talking about the article at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;259954
This would imply that a soft reset and establishing a new partnership would resolve the problem. However, in my case, and in many others that I have read in various forums, it hasn't. That article is also for ActiveSync 3.1, but we are using PPC 2002 which requires ActiveSync 3.5 or greater.
If you found a different article that solved your problem, it would be great if you could post the URL.

I had a similar problem a few times. I have a 3600. Whenever i plugged in the ipaq, it would set me up as a guest because it would not recoginize my device! What a pain. Because of this, i am not able to transfer files from my old account onto my PDA, becasuse it is "not the same device".
Any suggestions?
Also, where shall i order a Hotsynk Cable? Where is the cheapest and fastest way?

My searches of the microsoft site only revealed many frustrated people on this guest issue (approximate quote: 'I hope microsoft monitors these threads and acts on these issues' - unlikely!) .
I've found articles on connection problems, but not guest issues (with PPC product version 2.0, CE version 3.0, and activesync 3.6 - note I am not using PPC2002!).
I am convinced there must be some kind of cleanup on the desktop PC that can be done to fix this, or with a partnership setting on the PPC for this particular desktop (as I am continuing on synching with another PC as I did before with no problem).
(somwhat) patiently waiting....

I am amazed with the depth of information out there which details more-or-less identical problems with Guest accounts on ActiveSync and PDA's. I installed an industrial (Intermec) PPC2002 system running an application custom written by us at considerable cost. Although the application works extremely well they have the same problem I have seen 100's of times in the past few weeks. Everyone discusses having this problem and to date I have not seen a single definitive fault-finding flowchart. I pray one turns up because at the moment my client has to return the PDA to the cradle, delete the partnership, and create a new one after which the data file they have collected is captured and exported into a Unix system. The problem is:
1) Insert PDA into base (serial connection) for the first time
2) Sets up a partnership, all OK
3) Remove the PDA, use it, return it to the base
4) Connection fails, will not see PDA. Need to delete partnership etc etc
Major pain in the bum!!! Would love to see a comprehensive solution to this problem.

I had the same problem. I deleted my partnerships, soft reset, and reinstalled Active Sync with no luck. I ended up just hard resetting. That fixed it. It was a pain but it worked.

Ok, this problem is really getting to me as it now is more a disruption to me than a mere problem.
Has Gates and Company or Compaq come up with a real fix ?

Not a real fix but much simpler than reinstalling ActiveSync:
1) Turn off your PDA.
2) Go "Start" -> "Run" and type "syncmgr /quit"
3) Turn on your pda again.

My "GUEST" problems did not go away until I got Activesync 3.7 Build 3083.
