Is there a Dr (Mud) in the house? Anyone else's suggestions are most welcome of course. Please help me sort out all the available programs. I'm looking for the ones that will do the most and are also user friendly.
I would like to have a good backup program and a file manager, but I'm getting confused with all the different forum discussions.

Backup Buddy & Backup VFS, PiBackupII, myWorkbench, McFile, Filez, SyncWizard are the ones I'm reading about. I know there are personal preferences, but I need someone to tell me what I prefer!
Please be as specific and to the point as possible.
I'm running SilverScreenand use a 64MMC card on an m505.

Thanks in advance.

HI,

You can try myWorkbench. It has backup and restore built in plus many more features.

Here is the link www.toysoft.ca

Danny, thanks for the response. Does your program act as a file manager and backup program? Can it also backup data from my card?

Hi,

Its a complete file manager and it backups databases and applications from ram to the card only. It does not backup your files from the card to your desktop.

Hi everyone.

I too have Silverscreen and want to be sure that the file manager works well with it --- any suggestions?

Thanks.

It speaks well for our boards that Danny Wong, the creator of myWorkBench and Avantage, reads and attends to our questions.

It would be hard to say there is a better file manager that myWB. I have used it for more than a year and always with good results. The capabilities of myWB certainly exceed my needs. I also own McFile, Filez and PiDirect II. The only file manager I use is myWB. It is not that the others are not as good, they are simply not as complete. So if I am going to open a file manager it might as well be the one that gives me the most information and the most options.

I knew you were out there DrMud! Thanks for your input. I HAVE downloaded a demo of myWorkbench - it looks good. Not being a power user, though, I'm weighing out the cost factor with Filez.

Do you also backup to your desktop? If so, which program do you use? I still feel uneasy about having all my backup on a card that can get lost (I keep it in my Palm).

I tried myWB 3.0 on my M515 with a 64 MB SD card.
The features of the program are indeed impressive, but unfortunately, my Palm crashes (fatal reset) consistently every time I try to launch MiniCalc (Excel type program).
I approached ToySoft support e-mail on 26 Sep 2002, with a description of this problem, but all I've received back is an automated reply that they will reply "soon".
I would really like to use the program since it is rich with features and since I see that ToySoft is participating in this thread, perhaps this way, I may receive some assistance.
In any case, I use BackupBuddy to backup to my computer (have been using it for a couple of years with Palm Vx - very successfully) and BackupBuddy VFS to backup my M515 to the card.
Thanks for any assistance.

APJ,
Are you using myWB to launch the spread sheet app? Is MiniCalc on the card?

Johnny,
Yes I do back up to the desktop using BackUpBuddy and SyncWizard. BB is a four or five times a day thing; I move a lot of data from the Palm to the PC. SyncWizard for a complete mirror image, about once a week. They are very different applications and I really feel protected using both.

PS. I was missing in action. My appendix burst and I spent some time last week trying to be a patient. I'm not very good at that job.

Dr. Mud,
1. Get Well Quick !!
2. Yes I tried launching MiniCalc from myWB. No it is not on the card.
3. Actually, one of the nice things I found about myWB is that the application could be launched by choosing the database (for instance the name of book launched TealDoc). When I tried it with a MiniCalc sheet, I got the "Fatal Reset".
Thanks for your assist.

I have been assuming that you were telling me MiniCalc was working before you added myWB to your Palm. Correct?

I do have a concern that the MiniClac app could be damaged. What do you see when you check Properties for MiniCalc using myWB?

MiniCalc works beautifully without myWB present.
I'm sorry if I gave the impression that it didn't.
I've removed myWB in the meantime, so I can keep using the MiniCalc application.
Thanks.

HI,

Sorry if we didn't reply to your support email. Our mail server had some problems about 2 weeks ago.

If you have MiniCalc on the card there could be problems launching since it relies on the prefs and other dbs present in ram. When you move MiniCalc to the card you must move all the databases that associated to it.

I've found some strange stuff with MiniCalc especially when one of its pref file is encrypted. It will always crash. I have encryption on my Palm.

Does MIniCalc crash when launched from ram via myWB?

regards,

danny

Danny,
Thanks for your reply.
No, MiniCalc is installed in RAM and the Palm crashed when I tried to launch it from within myWB. I have not (to the best of my knowledge) invoked encryption on my Palm.
Please keep trying to help use your software.
Thanks,

HI,

If launching is the problem then don't use myWb to launch apps.
myWB was NEVER designed to be a launcher. It was added as feature and will probably to removed in the future version. myWB is a file manager.

danny

Once myWB is installed and has been invoked, the Palm crashes when I launch MiniCalc from the Palm built in Launcher.
This is some conflict between the two applications.

HI,

don't launch miniCalc from myWB. Use the launcher instead.
