Modems other than palm modems?

Has anyone tried useing a modem other than a Palm modem?
What I'm thinking of trying is a serial modem connected to my palm. If someone has already tried this can you let me know how it went?

I have been using serial modems with Palm units quite successfully.
I currently use a small pocket modem with a serial hotsync cable and null modem adapter with my M515. You do need a null modem adapter DB9F to DB9F (or DB25F depending on your modem) as you are effectively trying to connect two peripherals together.
