Hi Guys and Gals,
I have recently purchased a Nokia 6310i (Orange (UK)), I use this with my Psion 5MX and the Infra-red port to send and receive e-mail.
I can download e-mail and surf on the net (using Opera) with no problem. However when I upload e-mail with attachments (approx 50k) the line drops with no error messages. I had a similar thing with a Nokia phone in the past and had to alter the init. string.
I have configured the modem as per Nokia's web site and I have still not had any joy.
Has anybody has this problem?
If you could help it would be gratefully appreciated.
Thanks,
Sean

I have configured the modem as per Nokia's web site and I have still not had any joy. That sounds like a recipe for disaster - their .pdf files still tell you to install Message Suite which you must NOT do with a 5mx
The same 'generic' Nokia settings should work with the 6310 if you are not trying to use high speed data - either HSCSD or GPRS.
--------------------------------------------------------
NOKIA "Generic Settings"
including....7110, 8210, 8810, 8850, 6210
--------------------------------------------------------
Name - Nokia
Speed - 57600
Connect - Infrared
Fax Class - Auto
------------------
Init (reset) - AT&F&K4
Data - (blank)
Fax - (blank)
------------------
Flow - Software (Xon/Xoff)
Terminal (DSR/DTR) [ ] not checked
Carrier (DCD) [ ] not checked
Type - Mobile
Also, with the 5mx, you should have the "Mobile Connectivity Update" installed and this can be downloaded from the "Series 5" page of my website.

Thanks for the information, luckily I had only copied their Modem config in the pdf's.
I have modified my modem settings - hopefully this will resolve the problem. I will let you know how I get on.;)

Sean how much does 'surfing the net' or checking your mail roughly cost you with orange?, and what speed do you set the phone, curious is all! :)

Hi Guys and Gals,
Well I tried the settings stated earlier in this thread, unfortunately I still had the same problem.
After a bit of experimenting I am now using the following settings:
Speed - 57600 Baud
Connect Via - Infrared
Fax Class - Auto
Init. - AT&F&K3
Data init. string - AT+CBST=16
Flow Control - Software (XON/XOFF)
Terminal Detect - Ticked
Modem Type - Mobile
This difference between the Nokia documentation was to modify the Flow Control from Hardware to Software. I tried it last night and sent out 4 e-mails each with 56k attachments.....if the problem reoccurs again I will update this thread.
As for the cost of surfing - I need to double-check something and then I will update the thread also.
See ya

Hiya Sean et al...
Just excitedly tried your settings on my 6310i, hoping against all hope that I'd get some joy.
Alas.
It seems to have made the problem slightly worse!
My symptoms are much as you described... in my case, sending an email of over 1k simply drops the call (on the phone's side; my 5mx doesn't have a clue).
I am able to receive emails of any size, and, using Opera, I can send and receive email of any size using a web-based mail client.
It's when I crank up the resident email package, the one I use most often, that the problem happens. And only on sending.
---
Now, having punched in your settings, something ELSE seems to be happening... the phone dials my ISP, connects, takes some time, drops the call (as it used to), AND THEN... the phone resets itself!!! Restarts. Blammo. Screen goes blank. Light comes on. Phone swtiches on again.
Most curious.
---
If anyone has an explanation of the data init string, that might help me understand what's happening.
---
I've tried -- with no success whatsoever -- speaking to Nokia in South Africa. I've updgraded my phone software.
The only thing I'm not entirely certain about is whether or not my 5MX has the latest connectivity upgrade. I seem to remember doing it years ago. But maybe there's a newer version?
Would you mind letting me know how to check the version, and what the latest version is?
And any ideas as to how to get this buggy phone working as advertised?

Would you mind letting me know how to check the version, and what the latest version is? Mobile Connectivity Update 1.10 and it should be shown as that in Control Panel's "Add/Remove". There hasn't been an update to that, although there is also the "Mobile GPRS Update".

Thanks Mike...
Yup, I have that update installed. (Somehow, I don't think it's my 5MX. I bought a backup machine from a friend of mine, and it delivers exactly the same symptoms.)
And I'm almost certain it's the phone's software. (I have a 7110 that slides emails through seamlessly, even though it didn't initially, and needed a specific string -- at&f&k4.)
I'm told that the "&k3" part of the init string for the 6310i forces it into SOFTWARE flow control mode. But maybe there is something else that needs to be added to that init string?
Any idea what the data init string refers to? Is it something to do with the ISP? The modem on the other end of the transaction? Or is it something particular to the relationship between the phone and the 5MX?
I wish they wouldn't make these things so darn esoteric.

Any idea what the data init string refers to? I believe it defines the connection speed, which is unusual with a basic GSM connection and its inclusion may be specific to the Orange network.

I had exactly the same thing with the 6310i shutting down when I tried Mike's original settings.
I am now using GPRS with the phone with no problems, using these settings:
Speed - 115200 Baud
Connect Via - Infrared
Fax Class - Auto
Init. - ATZ
Data init. string
Flow Control - Hardware (RTS/CTS)
Terminal Detect - unticked
Modem Type - Mobile
Hope this helps.
Also I have subscribed to GPRS bundle with Orange which allows me to transfer 5MB of data a month for £15. It seems quite expensive but is pretty quick.
Let me know if there are any alternatives to this service.
Cheers,
S
