My Wife and I own two Sharp Wizards OZ 9600 II ,they are old
[1994] ,but have been extremely usefull and reliable ,we frequently transfer data between the two units using the infrared
ports and the peripherals menu ,recently however the items
listed in the menu and sub menu show dimmed and cannot be
activated ,I have changed the batteries adjusted contrast etc.
but nothing I have tried so far has solved the problem
We are not yet ready to part with the by now very familiar devices
any one out there who knows the solution ?

Try a hard reset, as suggested in earlier post.
Be sure you replace all the batteries including the backup with totally fresh ones.
If you have the AC/mains power supply, see if the problem is only on battery power, or also on external power.
Try accessing the menus using the keyboard instead of the touch screen.
If you can use the keys to access the functions, but your touch function is not working, try recalibrating the screen.
If the screen calibration routine doesn't work, you probably have a bad connection or bad ribbon cable (between the main circuit board and the screen). If you are willing and able to do so, the unit can be taken apart to see if perhaps it's only a loose connection that can be corrected.
If the touch screen doesn't work, the calibration routine doesn't work, and yet the menus/functions can be accessed by keyboard commands, it's time to either use it as-is, or replace it. Closest replacement is the OZ-9500 (256kb) or OZ-9520 (512kb). For the cost difference in eBay (for example) you might be better off with a ZR-5800 as a replacement (unless you have a big investment in using the OZ-compatible IC program cards).
Good luck!

Hey,
Whatever you do be sure to backup your data before removing all the cells, you will lose everything. Do both units have the same trouble? That would seem odd, and you didn't say. How full is your memory? Do you have any ram cards to back up onto?
There is a place in Richardson Texas that can fix up your units and may be able to back them up if you cannot. The name is Romax Enterprises, (972) 690-9064. I had them do several repairs on different units for me and was well pleased. I think they will give a free estim if you ship to them. I have had several wizards and always thought the tremendous screen realestate on the 9600 was great.
If only one of the units is in trouble you may be able to save files to the other thru a ram card while the bad one gets fixed.
They are still easy to find on ebay for econo price if all else fails.
Good Luck.
I may have some IC Cards for it if you are interested. I may be interested in IC cards you have if you make a change.
