 I have been through uninstall/install of zire software on my desktop a couple of times trying both synchronization with Outlook and synchronization with Palm Desktop software. Neither gets through the installation as it crashes at the hotsync operation. I am connected using USB, with Local USB checked under HotSyncManager 4.0.1 and always access hotsync via the favorites button as per instruction. After exiting out of installation I cannot perform hotsync either. I get a timeout error on the zire reading "The connections between your handheld and the computer could not be established..". It is interesting that when I check in windows device manager under the USB section I get an exclamation point next to USB device: "The drivers for this device are not installed: (Code 28) To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver." Once the Zire times out then the USB device and exclamation point disappear. According the the microsoft knowledge base this is what a driver does when installing for the first time. One interesting piece of information is that under Hardware manager under Universal Serial Bus controllers I have the following listings:
Standard PCI to USB Host Controller
Standard OpenHDC USB Host Controller
Standard OpenHDC USB Host Controller
USB 2.0 Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
I don't know anything about my built-in USB configuration but when I saw "USB Hub" I thought it worth mentioning as I have heard they can be problematic. I have also heard that Windows 2000 (Professional) is bad with periferals.

My OS is Windows 2000 Professional

I have tried the following:
-Syncronization with both Outlook and Palm Desktop.
-Restarting after software installation (cannot get through hotsync portion) and after connecting via USB.
-Uninstall/reinstall.
-Tried installing the USB driver off the disk under hardware manager, but Windows did not allow me to use any other than the recommended system driver. Have NOT tried using Add/Remove hardware.
-Tried changing bios setting of USB controller from OS to BIOS.

Me again,
I finally successfully completed desktop installation and got hotsync to work using the MOUSE USB port which does not have a built-in hub. I guess my instinct about the built-in USB hub being problematic was correct.
:D
