Hello everybody,

I am trying to develop a comprehensive list of websites who have a link to the netBook pro petition.
Here is the first draft. I managed to divide it into three categories:
1) developers and enthusiasts
2) forums
3) e-magazines and the like.

developers and enthusiasts are kindly encouraged to mention and spread the word of the petition on their own sites.

cheers

I was glad to see that also an italian psion on-line distributor - run by Matteo Verlucca - joined in the list:

www.psion-it.com

As a consequence, we will add a fourth category in order to host such active supporters:

4) Psion distributors and VARs (Value Added Resellers)

In fact, I hope that other third parties such as VARs and distributors in general as well as software houses and the like will follow their example.

Hey out there! is anybody else reading this?

now Costantino jumped at the chance of linking his site www.epocbooks.com at the petition for adding further visibility to our initiative.

this is not a remake of a famous 007 film...
this is actually our psion-comrade Mr. Victor Kviat who most of you know as the brilliant author of freeware apps such as the Network Utilities for EPOC.

Victor joined in the petition promotion operation, by adding a nice banner to his website

Please excuse my sheer enthusiasm displayed in the subject for the most recent website who joined in the list of those supporting the nB pro petition:

http://faculty.washington.edu/dushaw/psion/netbook.html

it is actually Brian Dushaw's one. Not only Brian is a frequent Psionplace user, but also a real "Linux-on-Psion" guru as well!

so I am sure you will join me in thanking him very much for both his kind commitment and active support as well as inviting the other Psion-related websites to ensure maximum visibility to our initiative.

Symbianfully yours;)

PS: this morning we reached signature no. 1.000 and the number is steadily growing

I am pretty confident you will have recognized the new link which has just added itself to the list of the "active supporters".

All these abbreviations displayed in the subject and ready to be expanded are Huub Linthorst's trademark.

http://website.leidenuniv.nl/~linthorsthjm/exabetal/

The brilliant author of ExAb, CodeSafe, S5mboles, SpellX and more, has just chosen to host a link to the petition and is currently spreading the word around a number of Ex Ab users and Benelux Symbian fans in general.

Hopefully, new endorsers as well as new links will follow...

The list of psion-related sites actively promoting the petition keeps on growing day by day...

now there is one more of them, which I am confident almost every netBook power user will have browsed on it more than once.

Please note I am not going to reveal either the webmaster's name or his nickname, but just his last name;) and let you guess the rest:

His family name is silvester

his website is http://www.silvester.org.uk

Hi Gianluca,

How about creating a banner (standard size) for those of us who display them on our sites? I saw Victor Kviat's but I guess I'd prefer either a) English only, or b) multiple languages instead of just English+Russian...

Thoughts?

Best regards,
Martin

Ciao Martin,
I would love to have a multiple language banner for the petition.
you can count me in by now for translating the italian version of the banner text.
I am sure that others will follow for german, french, spanish, japanese, hungarian, polish, czech etc etc...
when are we going to start?

I would like to express my gratitude to Keith - a 79-year-old Psion power user (and trained biker as well) - who actually helped me in dealing with macro 5, by sending me his clear step-by-step guide.

It was my pleasure therefore to find a link to the petition on his very Psion-friendly site http://ohsix827.home.comcast.net/

Hi folks!

Like many of you I am an Epoc Digest subscriber. I personally think that PsionPlace as well as the Epoc Digest are two real salvation stills for all the fellow psion users.

therefore I thought it was time to mention some contribution from "the Digest" and here is a claim which I liked so much that I would propose it for an award-nomination, if not for an oscar:)

It is actually a Mark Deppe's message, dated 9 Jun 2003, the very first petition day:

>From: Mark Deppe
>Subject: netbook petition, sign here

>Sign the great save the symbian netbook petition here :-) tell >your friends and businesses et al etc. etc.

>Kind regards

>Mark

I wish I could publicly thank Mark for his efforts in order to symbolically thank every committed psion fan who keeps on spreading the word of the petition around.;)

At the moment of this writing, the number of endorsers is close to 1.090...

Ciao all!

this post is about the fact that the petition is being widely discussed in several different language.

I would like to express my gratitude for the outstanding work displayed by our fellow psion russian comrades such as King Midas and Robin Hood.

Midas is the moderator of Mypsion.ru, on which you will find a nice banner in Russian language dealing with the petition

www.mypsion.ru

Robin - author of apps such as epoc task manager, alarmplus and resetplus - added the above-mentioned banner in the english version, this time, to every program of his which is available on Mypsion.ru . the result is as follows:

http://www.mypsion.ru/alarmplus.php
http://www.mypsion.ru/taskman.php
http://www.mypsion.ru/montana.php
http://www.mypsion.ru/montana7.php

http://www.mypsion.ru/moonclock.php
http://www.mypsion.ru/resetplus.php
http://www.mypsion.ru/revosound.php
http://www.mypsion.ru/strippoker.php

Not only these two guys did so, but also Midas posted a message on http://www.hpc.ru/news/nw/81/8183.shtml as well, thus allowing for further visibility on a website dealing with pdas in general.

Surely this commitment brought many results, as I am sure most of you will have noticed the growing number of russian signatures on the petition endorsers' list.

Therefore, I am sure you will join in saying to Midas and Robin our biggest

thanks to the kind support of John Montgomery, the petition has now a link on his site, which is widely known for his java psion link.

I quote from John's site: "Java Psion Link (JPL), is intended to be a cross-platform solution for transferring files between Psion Epoc PDAs (netBook, series 7, 5Mx, revo) and any computer with a serial port and the ability to run java". among the list you can include also Apple, for instance...

Ciao Everybody,

German-speaking people confirm themselves as being particularly active in promoting the petition. here you will find another example which IMHO is particularly important as it is a reseller, this time, joining in the initiative.

Please welcome Christoph from www.pulster.de who has just put a link on his site:

I am glad that Christoph joined in and I hope that other resellers and distributors will follow his example and take an active part in the petition. their support would definitely add weight and therefore value to our initiative.

Please check this post regularly, as I am going to add some more news regarding very interesting sites which are going to host a link, and - among them - there is a pretty big one... but i will keep it as a surprise

Hello everybody!

today I'll be mentioning one of the most exhaustive netbook-related sites I have ever browsed on:

It is Edward Hasbrouck's one, which is full of detailed notes about using the netbook in various situations as well as a comprehensive report about his experience in buying a Malaybook.

I suppose you will be joining me in thanking Edward - a regular psionplace member - for his contribution on his very nice site.

in fact Edward actually added a brief description, endorsement, and link to the petition at http://hasbrouck.org/netbook

I hope that others will follow his example very soon in keeping on promoting the word of the petition.

I am here just to mention the contribute of a fellow italian Psion-enthusiast whose name is Davide and nickname is Blasfemo, respectively.

Not only Blasfemo kindly hosted a link on his precious site, but also hosted the Italian translation of the petition as well, thus enabling those who may be not familiar with english to fully understand the meaning of the initiative.

I am glad to update the list of the sites with a new project which has just been announced on the Epoc Digest: the Psion Computer Journal & Society, run by Will Green at:

http://www.psioncomputer.com/

You will notice that Will managed to persuade also Uncle Sam to join in the petition promotion.

BTW, the journal will start its publication with the Autumn edition (October).

Will kindly points out that the The Psion Computer Journal nor the Psion Computer Society have no connection at all with Psion the company.

I am sure that you will join me in thanking Will for his kind support as well as wishing him the very best for his new initiative

it is undoubtedly great being part of this community and the support coming from epoc/symbian authorities such as

Not only Luciano signed in favour of the petition, but he also hosted the Italian translation, so that every visitor of his site could manage to get to know and understand the whole spirit of our initiative.

It is an excellent example of how the petition can be supported and promoted, don't you agree?

Ciao All,

I would like to express my gratitude to a developer who is also a daily user of this forum and has found a very creative and original way to promote the petition initiative

I am confident that every Psion Place member knows Sir Chris S. Handley, author of several applications, the latest of which has been just released on the FreEpoc site.

I am talking about FastBackup, which is being announced in the software sub-forum here on Psion Place.

In the Help data file which is included in the app., Chris talks about the petition and expresses his personal opinions about it.

I quote from his message:

"Here are some of the reasons (opinions) that I think a Netbook Pro running Symbian OS would make a great deal of sense, even if Psion Teklogix's narrow market view has excluded them so far:

Many of the existing EPOC (now Symbian) software developers have expressed an interest in seeing the Symbian OS on the Netbook Pro, and would apparently be quite keen on (easily) porting their current applications to it, even if the immediate return was not great. This would ensure a good software base for consumers.

The Symbian OS is likely to be the most common OS on smart phones in the next few years, certainly it won't be niche, so that there seems a clear market for a robust sub-notebook "laptop" with 8 hour battery life, instant-on, running the same software & seamlessly sharing documents with such phones.

With the manufacture of existing NetBooks winding down, there exists no way for existing Psion Teklogix business customers to buy more NetBooks, because the new NetBook Pros will generally require completely new software to be written for them. It is much easier for such customers to modify their software to work on Symbian OS, and some may not wish to tie themselves to Microsoft."

Note: Chris kindly points out that his opinions are very personal and stated here do not necessarily reflect the views of FreEPOC.

What a surprisingly innovative way to promote the petition,
don't you agree?

Therefore, thanks very much Chris for your great commitmente and support and keep up the very good work!

Ciao all!

you may have noticed that there is a third Symbian-related petition at petitiononline.com:

http://www.petitiononline.com/p800/petition.html

Sony Ericsson is kindly requested to give the opportunity of an upgrade from the current UIQ 2.0 version to the new UIQ 2.1 (which will be one of the main novelties of the new P900 smartphone).

If you browse around the signatures you will easily recognize some familiar endorsers among the most frequent posters at psionplace ;)

I have already signed in favour of it, both because the fact that a P800 has been one of my biggest temptations and the fact I believe it is a right cause to battle for.

No matter how hard these tasks may seem, especially when you face a big multinational business such as S.E. and the like. I personally believe that we have to take position as consumers and stand for what we think it is right...

In the meantime, this may be a good chance for browsing on his interesting site and picking up some more cherries: just to make one example, Ksion is a very interesting alternative to the standard "contacts" application and I am pretty confident it will capture the attention of many power users - as well as the "mobile professionals" - here at psionplace.

that's all for now, just to say that Wolfgang may have some surprises in progress in the next few months, in terms of new software for ER5.

keep up the good work!

Ciao all!

Thanks to Tony Dennis at the Inquirer, here is another webpage linked to the Symbian Netbook Pro Petition:

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=14874

it is actually an article which dates back to the recent CEBITfair and which I had probably overlooked at that time.

thanks again to Tony both for mentioning this initiative and for telling it to us as well...

in the meantime, the number of endorsers reached quota 2496 and we should welcome "Mr. 2500" quite soon ;)

The Symbian based Sendo X was finally released a few days ago. Excellent reviews so far! It would be nice to be able to say that it is selling just as well, but it is too early for that.

What has the Sendo X got to do with the netBook petition?

1. It shows that the Symbian game is not only for the Nokias, Ericssons, Sonys, Samsungs and Motorolas of this world. Small innovative companies can provide leading edge products if they know their niche markets well.

2. It gives a quite interesting clearly defined development time for a Symbian device. 15 months ago the Sendo development team was still developing on a Microsoft platform, and had not even thought about Symbian nor had developed one single line of Symbian code. 15 months later the device is out.

3. One does not necessarily need to be on the latest Symbian OS version to produce a killer device. The Sendo X still runs on v6.1, using the Series 60 UI, albeit some functionality has certainly been ported back from v7.

See Ewan's review here:

http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/reviews/review2.php?id=105.

Incidentally, a Psion aquisition of Sendo was suggested by quite a few shareholders in that consequential EGM some months ago as the fastest route back on track... There is still time before Sendo shares become too expensive...

cheers
