I am quite sure this has been covered earlier but I could not find it exactly. Occasionally, when I perform a QuickInstall, I get a message to the effect that there is no application on the SD card to open file(s). Usually, it doesn't bother me because the files not being opened are 'readme's or something else I don't care about. However, I am close to running out of my 16MB on the handheld and may want to run stuff from the card. How do I? I've read of PiDirect (whatever that is) and other types of managers. I do have Filez installed on the handheld as well as LauncherX. Do I need more and is there a source to access to study up on the subject?

I think I'm tired of (my fault for sure) of dropping $10 here, $20 there for all the nifty things that'll run on the Palm. Thanks in advance.

Two things in your post.

1. Non-Palm apps on the card. Unless you have them there for a reason, dump them. They are just meaningless clutter. I store a few .txt manuals, etc., but the rest of the stuff is garbage.

2. Launching from the card.

All you need to do is to use either the file manager in launcherX or FileZ to create a folder on the card. It should be located within the 'Palm' folder, and called 'Launcher'.

Move any programs you want to launch from the card here. You can use FileZ to move the main file, or use LauncherX itself. I don't have that particular program, but it probably has moving function. With ZLauncher or YiShow, you touch and hold the program's icon for a second and a menu pops up. From that menu, select 'Move to card' and the launcher moves the program (and usually the necessary data files) to the 'Launcher' folder for you AND automatically displays it on the main screen again (sometimes after a rescan, etc.) with a small card icon to show its new status.

This frees up main memory at a penalty of slightly slower startup speeds.

You can free up memory AND keep speeds most of the time IF your launcher lets you launch from anywhere on your card! ZLauncher, for example, sets the card up as a catagory of its own, tab and all. By opening that category, I can peruse my card and launch any program stored anywhere on the card.

This lets me create a folder I call 'Archive', where I store programs I use once in a while- games, speciality calculators, rarely used applications, etc. When I DO want to use it, I just find it again and click on it. Viola!

you may want to look at compressing your files.

have a look at lightnzip at www.toysoft.ca

thanks to everyone for replies to my thread. i was able to move some apps using launcherX without problems. obviously, the more crap i have on the handheld/card, the slower things go. c'est la vie.

now i'm going to investigate the mp3 phenomenon. should be interesting.
